Rick & Morty - Therapist speech to pickle Rick

Season 3 Episode 3

"Rick the only link between your unquestionable intelligence and the sickness destroying your family is that everyone in your family, you included, use intelligence to justify sickness. You seem to alternate between viewing your own mind as an unstoppable force and as an inescapable curse, and I think it’s because the only truly unapproachable concept for you is that it’s your mind within your control, you chose to come here, you chose to talk to belittle my vocation, just as you chose to become a pickle. You are the master of your universe, and yet you are dripping with rat blood and feces, your enormous mind literally vegetating by your own hand. I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I am bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass, because the thing about repairing, maintaining and cleaning is: it’s not an adventure. There’s no way to do it so wrong you might die. It’s just work. And the bottom line is: some people are ok going to work and some people, well some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose."

Damn, you know she's a good therapist when fans of Rick are acting like Beth: in denial about Rick's behavior and angry at the therapist for telling the truth.

This is actually a pretty healthy concept to be put in a show.

I know many will disagree but to me this scene is easily one of the most epic moments in the entire show.

I've waited so long for this. For the writers to put aside the comedy and finally have someone tell Rick about himself. This felt really good to see

That therapist owned rick, and for once he understood, even for a brief moment, he's the problem.

I love Rick but he totally got slammed by that therapist.

like morty said in the prison break episode, "no one can have a normal life with rick around. everything real turns fake, everything right turns wrong, and all you know is you know nothing and he knows everything. Rick is not a villain, but he shouldn't be your hero."

I love rick, but what this lady says is true

Dr Wong isn't insulting or attacking Rick, and Rick knows that. Rick is also self aware enough to recognise the truth about his own character when it is plainly stated like this. I Imagine the commenters who were upset by this scene felt personally attacked because they share many of the character flaws of Rick and have invested in the character as a role model, rather than as an antihero.

"The same way I'm bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass" that light cussing is such a fine touch. She's not there to coddle Rick and tell him what he wants to hear, she's there to help him by giving him a harsh truth.

This therapist lady is easily my favourite character of the new season, followed closely by Jaguar.

I love how this random therapist is lowkey one of the smartest people in this show

How do you "defeat" a therapist? How do you "pull a Rick" on one? How do you outscience, outsmart, or otherwise win in a fight against a therapist?

All of Rick's previous opponents, aside from the ones he creates himself, are playing the same game as him. Most of the time he's far better than his opponents (Those aliens trying to steal his secrets, The galactic federation, the parasites, satan, etc) some are his equals (That one alien in his car battery, Jaguar, etc) and heck, some are even better at it than him (Evil Rick/Evil Morty). But they're all, at the end of the day, trying to out-think, out-scam, or outdo rick in some way.

But a regular human therapist isn't trying to outdo you in a fight. Therapy isn't a battle, it's just a doctor's appointment. Dr Wong isn't playing Rick's game, she's just here to say "look, here's what's troubling you, if you want to cure it call me, next patient please."

Rick can't outscience someone who isn't even trying to compete with him in the first place

So, why exactly are people hating this scene? Because Rick got knocked down a peg for once? Rick isn't invulnerable . It's actually refreshing to introduce  a character like Dr Wong, who can actually stand her ground against Rick. And here's the thing. Rick didn't say anything back, because Dr Wong based on her entire assessment of Rick on *LOGIC* not emotion.

Rick doesn't respect people for having emotions or vulnerabilities, and like Dr Wong said, he punishes people for having them, like he does to Morty all the time. But Dr Wong isn't leading with emotion here. She's not saying what she's saying because she's got some kind of insecurity over Rick belittling her or that she has some agenda to come off as a sanctimonious therapist by sounding smart. She's saying what she's saying based on simple observation and logical thought process.

Rick can't ague back, because she's not leaving herself open. He has *nothing* to work with. How many times has Morty tried to argue with Rick and Rick responded by simply calling Morty out for his own insecurities that he was trying to push forward by fighting against whatever Rick was doing?  Dr Wong wasn't trying to win one over on Rick. And that's how she wins in the end

There are two types of people:
1. People who's favorite moment was this.
2. People who's favorite moment was PICKLE RICCKKKK!

I'm trying to become a therapist and I think Dr. Wong is a perfect example of my ideal vision of what a therapist should be like

Rick and Beth are so obsessed with maintaining their delusional facade of having a "healthy life" that they are now actively worsening their children's lives. With Jerry gone, Dr. Wong was one of the last chances for Morty and Summer to finally get some normalcy back into their lives, but because of Rick and Beth's selfishness, that chance is irrevocably torn from them.

Honestly, this scene spoke to me as a17 years old, realized i need to clean my room, it may not be enjoyable, might even be the most mundane thing, but nonetheless, its work, it has to be done whether i like it or not.

Edit: gonna try to find a balance between work, school and a life, and I’m okay with this

In other words, Rick and his family directly associate being smart with being unhappy and vice versa, being happy with being stupid. Rick believes that his need to escape reality through drugs and constant difficulty with other people is just a part of being a genius rather than because he neglects his mental health. He'd rather form a convoluted scheme rather than sit through a single therapy session because people who are at peace with themselves and their world, to Rick, are subhuman.

I don't get why people hate this scene? Rick is not above from being put in his place and thats what he got, he got fucking told.
