The 1973 marketing for The Exorcist was brilliant. Rumors spread that people were having nervous breakdowns and heart attacks watching it - which of course made more people want to see it.

interestingly, Ellen had been nominated for The Last Picture Show the previous year, yet she wasn’t considered “well established”; somewhat understandable, given that Anne Bancroft, Jane Fonda and Audrey Hepburn were all oscar WINNERS at that point…..

What was The Exorcist supposed to be ripping off?

I wonder why Shirley MacLaine wasn't considered for the role. Her and Blatty were friends. Her daughter was on the cover of the book, according to Shirley.

It’s really hard to imagine Audrey Hepburn pulling that roll off with her highfalutin Transatlantic/Belgian French whatever the hell her fabulous accent was (is?) called. She was way too fancy for a character like Chris MacNeil. Burstyn is perfectly cast. She’s wonderful in the role. I think it’s her best screen performance.

That’s why…one doesn’t have to look like hell, anywhere. I fix myself always. Only at home I look like a homeless person 😂

An interesting side note: Anissa Jones, who'd played Buffy in "Family Affair", a family sit-com popular during the 1960s, expressed a desire to portray Regan, but Friedkin thought everyone would think that "Buffy" was being demonically possessed. She was later offered to read for the part of Iris in "Taxi Driver", which she turned down, feeling that she'd been type-cast. She died not long after in Oceanside, California, of a massive drug overdose, in August of '76, at the age of 18.

It's one of Ellen's GREAT tour de forces.

I probably would have shared a lot of Jane Fonda’s political convictions but dear lord she sounds like she was an exhausting human being to work with lol

A bit like Ferris Bueller leads nearly fired! Called to a costume lookover, the 3 poked about as normal people. Then director Hughes called them out for no chemistry! Matthew Broderick luckily defused it.

Ellen Burstyn was a very attractive woman, maybe too attractive for this role? There was a very brief clip of Audrey Hepburn here, the scene taken from "Charade"(1963), staring; Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, and George Kennedy. Great movie!!

Ellen’s performance in this film should have won every single award in 1974.

I'll always miss Friedkin's brutal unapologetic honesty. RIP
