Royel Otis on meeting each other, playing live and Sydney | DIFFUS

Bisher hätten wir die Musik von Royel Otis als Indie-Pop beschrieben, irgendwie sonnendurchflutet, beschwingt, manchmal ein bisschen psychedelisch. Als wir beim MS Dockville kürzlich aber ein rares Interview mit dem australischen Duo ergattert haben, wurden wir eines besseren belehrt: „Es klingt wie betrunkener Pop. Punk. Gebrabbel. Es gibt Bands, nach denen wir klingen wollen, aber nach denen wir nicht klingen. Wir wollen wie The Cure klingen, aber ich finde nicht, dass wir das tun“. Kurz vor ihrem Auftritt sprechen die beiden Freunde aus Sydney mit uns über ihr Kennenlernen, den plötzlichen Erfolg von „Oysters in my pocket“ und die Intensität eines Lebens im Tourbus.

Kennengelernt haben sich Royel Maddell und Otis Pavlovic um das Jahr 2019: „Wir haben mit dem selben Freundeskreis abgehangen und irgendwann gemerkt, dass wir die selbe Musik mögen und haben angefangen, uns gegenseitig Ideen zu zeigen.“ Gemeinsamer Nenner ist zu Beginn der Yacht-Rock der Alessi Brothers – neben The Cure noch so eine Band, die man im späteren Indie-Sound von Royel Otis nur noch vage heraushört. Vielmehr bringt ihre erste EP „Campus“ dem Duo Vergleiche mit Tame Impala, MGMT und anderen Indie-Acts der 2010er ein. 

Der große Knall folgt dann wenige Monate später. Im März 2022 veröffentlichen Royel Otis die Single „Oysters in my Pocket“ und landen damit einen Hit, der sich von selbst erklärt, sobald man ihn hört. Die rhythmisch tuckernden Gitarren und Drums, lang gezogene Streicher, deren Melancholie Royel Otis unbesorgt weg wischen: „Oh well, that’s miles away“. Der Song klingt unverkrampft und catchy, als hätte er auch schon 2013 statt 2023 erscheinen können, und das im besten Sinne.

Vom aktuellen Zeitgeschehen oder dem flauen Gefühl, gerade eine zweijährige Pandemie durchgemacht zu haben, ist hier nichts zu hören, stattdessen fühlt man sich insbesondere als Indie-Fan der ersten Stunde an endlose Festivalsommer zurückerinnert. „Als wir ‘Oysters in my pocket’ veröffentlicht haben, haben wir nicht erwartet, dass es so gut funktionieren wird. Es kam aus dem nichts – von niemand kennt einen einzigen Song zu eine Riesenmenge singt das einstimmig mit. Das war ziemlich cool.“ Im Interview auf dem Dockville reflektieren Royel Otis ihren aktuellen Erfolg, sprechen über ihre Heimat Sydney und darüber, warum sie zum Musizieren lieber raus aufs Land fahren. Außerdem geht es um Lampenfieber, die Geschichte ihres Kennenlernens und darum, wie inspirierend eine Dusche sein kann.

I fell in love them because their music makes me feel like a child before anxiety joined the group of emotions. Just having fun and only caring about being happy- I describe their music to people as “happy go lucky” music

Aussie bands seem to have this no-fucks-given attitude. Being so far away from the rest of the world, they seem to be able to pick and choose their influences, unadulterated by mainstream. I can't say enough about bands like Royel Otis, King Gizzard and others. They just keep putting out amazing stuff.
