Shimla Sinking: Why Are Himalayan Hill Towns Sinking? Reasons Explained By Climate Change Scientist

On the sinking of hills of Shimla city, Principal Scientist at the Centre for Climate Change, Dr. SS Randhawa says the geological structure of the rocks, including their type and the extent of groundwater infiltration, plays a significant role in the subsidence of certain areas. In the areas where the rock strata are fractured, or there is homogeneity in lithology, weak zones begin to sink. He further said that, we have to work on water management regarding this issue. The surface water has to be channelised in an organised and controlled manner.
