To build further consider this the psychology of shot *types* which then moves you into philosophy of shot *composition*. For example notice how almost all the demos clips have the subject centered but changing this can give different subtext (1:25 versus 1:07 even if you removed the trees or the nukes).
It may feel natural to center things in frame to remove empty visuals, or to balance symmetrically, but whitespace is a character too.
A great movie that plays with unbalanced emptiness is The Kings Speech.
