An homage to festivity: The Partita for Solo Violin No. 3 in E major (BWV 1006) by Johann Sebastian Bach. Gidon Kremer plays in the Church of St. Nikolaus in Lockenhaus, Burgenland. The recording dates from 2006.

Of the three partitas for solo violin, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) composed the third in radiant E major. Its first part, the Preludio, is hardly to be surpassed in its festive character. The popular introductory piece with its triadic breaks was used again and again by Bach in various arrangements. Overall, Partita No. 3 consists of a colorful bouquet of gallantries. These were the French court dances that were popular in Bach’s time and were used instead of the traditional sequence of movements in the German suite (allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue).

One of the movements of the Violin Partita in E major even received a very special honor: The third piece, the Gavotte en Rondeau, is on one of the Voyager Golden Records, special data disks with image and audio information that were attached to the Voyager space probes in order to convey the essence of humanity to any extra-terrestrials out there.

Bach’s 3rd Partita for Violin is certainly out-of-this-world beautiful – especially so with the virtuoso playing of Gidon Kremer in front of the gleaming gold altar of the Church of St. Nikolaus in Lockenhaus, Burgenland.

Plays well. Good understanding of Bach. I believe that he's playing on a Nicolo Amati violin, which he owns. But please correct me if I'm mistaken about the latter. Nice violin!

Couldn't have picked a better thumbnail that didn't make the violinist look like he was mid-sneeze?
