In this video I explain how I designed, printed and assembled a large surface popper fishing lure for pike and musky. I have been doing a lot of designing and printing of large hard baits for fishing lately which is a quick deviation from my soft plastic baits that I am traditionally used to. I figured this would be a good introduction to some of my techniques I use with fusion 360 by Autodesk. I have been using fusion 360 to design baits now for about a year, mostly crankbaits but I had not seen a large surface popper before so I thought it would be cool to have a large popper in the same design as its smaller cousins.

To design this bait I used techniques I learned from the Sthone youtube channel which you can find here:

The actual video with this technique used can be found here:

To finish this bait I used a popular 3D print coating epoxy called XTC-3D, although it does work well the set up time does take awhile, it off gasses a lot of fumes and it is a volumetric epoxy which means you will need to figure out how to get accurate volume measurements for mixing. I have since tried multiple other coatings and I will be doing a video shortly on which ones I find the most effective. I have recently been using a good weight to weight measured epoxy that seems to be holding up well, low VOC and a standard cure time with a good working time as well. I will go more in depth on that epoxy in the future video.

I also did some fly tying for this bait making a "bucktail" on the rear treble hook which I thought added a little bit of traditional flare to this new school popper.

I printed the original of this bait on a heavily modified Anet A8 3d printer, it has been modified for safety with a new power supply and new firmware to include thermal runaway. If you are thinking about getting an Anet A8 I would advise these upgrades as a must for the printer.

I think this lure should work well for northern pike in the larger size range, I'm hoping that when the ice clears this year I will be able to use it to get a larger fish in the 40 inch range. It's a tall order but be sure to subscribe because you never know what may happen. This spring I think I am going to focus on fishing for large pike and muskellunge which I have not traditionally targeted, I think it may be a good learning experience and may be a fun exercise in testing new waters.

That lure looks great! Your UV curing box is pretty cool too! 👍

Great Job Elliott. Try using devcon 2 epoxy. I use the 5min for small baits and 30min for larger ones like your popper. Give it two coats. Caught multiple pikes on them. It withstands those toothy critter teeth without a prob. Some scratches but this gives me even more confidence in my bait. Lol. Keep up the good work

looks good..

UV glue lure coating is easy and fast
plastic bucket - uv led strips - USB Step UP/Down Power Supply Module - power bank..most uv glue cure in 5-10 min
( LED strips goes from LED 2835- 3014- 5050- 5630- 7020
strength )
uv flashlight 100 leds 395nm to set the glue befor cure in the bucket.

How are you finding the center point on each analysis in order to draw the ellipse sketch perfectly?

Those came out great... and thanks for the channel plug. I learn something new about Fusion every time I watch one of your videos. I didn't know you could move rotate a body so easily until I saw you do it in this video. I'm trying to use Fusion more in my new videos because it's available to more people so every new thing I learn helps out. Keep up the great work I can't wait to see what you come up with next. Also if you want to learn more about air brushing baits check out the channel "Lure Me In Custom Painted Crankbaits" I've learned a lot for him.

When making the eclipse do you constrain them?

Soft plastics are fine, but messy and potentially hazardous with the fumes and the skin cooking molten plastic. Would like to see more 3D hardbaits, top water and diving and etc.

Nice Elliott!!! I appreciated the fusion walk through as well. Using offset planes like that is a great idea. Seems a lot easier for these kind of baits as compared to the the sculpt environment.

It's so big, it can't really be a popper. Maybe a boomer? Okay boomer... I apologize for this comment.
