CAPTCHA's are Killing the Internet - Are You Even Real?

"CAPTCHA"s (once an industry standard security verification system online)... has become nothing more than a nuisance to actual human users, with no discernable upside, and ample methods of bypass.

With proxy services and AI programs all dedicated to defeating these "checks"... the CAPTCHA system is an antiquated defensive measure that the internet has not yet abandoned.

I'd heard somewhere that these days, all captcha does now is train AI to recognize objects in images

The Steam captcha made me doubt I was actually a human being and not a malicious bot.

I'm imagining UE failed a CAPTCHA right before putting this video together

One thing I've noticed is that Google's captcha is horrible for humans to use. At one point, it was deliberately making puzzles harder and harder to solve, the more you are successful, by making the image load-in slower, using lower-quality resolution images, or forcing you to solve half a dozen puzzles with zero margin for error (and since captcha images are all programmed by an AI on google's part, its hit-or-miss whether or not you have the same understanding as the AI). The audio test is a lot more tolerable, but Google with actively restrict you from using it if you're on it's hit list.

Google thinks you're a bot for being TOO good at a test to see if you're human, which has led me to conclude that its complete garbage.

What's terrible is the photos in the captcha are so horribly fuzzy you can't make it out.

I've heard recently that they monitor the way the mouse moves to try and ascertain if the user is a human or an AI.

I've worked with non-AI machine vision for three years. We had software that could identify a freshly soldered SMD component 1mm in length, based on a magnified, distorted, noisy 2D image. It could identify the text (painted or engraved), the polarity, the shape, and even the solder joint's quality with an ~80% success rate. That experience has convinced me that captchas are worthless.

I stumbled upon one of the new ones recently, where it asked me to click on the non living object.
On a fuzzy background there were blurred pictures of a sofa, a cow, an elephant and an ostrich I think? There might've been more, but those 4 will be enough to paint the picture

The test proved two things:
1. That these sorts of checks have become needlessly annoying.
2. That maybe I am a robot as I clicked on the cow with the precision, speed and confidence of a Japanese samurai.

I was fast forwarding one of your other videos and my youtube phone app presented me with a new button which let me skip directly past your ad read. The youtube app knew exactly where your ad read was and has a 'jump ahead' button which essentially functuons as a 'skip ad' button. It says 'skipping commonly skipped section', but it placed me directly at the end of the ad. Looks like Google isn't a big fan of ads not going directly through them lol

I swear we are living in an alternate bad timeline.

Why does everything have to be terrible all the time?

Welcome to the corporate owned and mandated internet, where the user is an afterthought.

I have definitely stopped using sites because of the captcha. I have also seen them inconsistently apply their selections, as well as let me pass even though I know I missed an image. The only real test happening is one of patience, and bots can't lose patience, so it's pointless.

The problem with captcha is that it assumes that the malicious person is just going to throw their hands up in the air and give up. It also assumes that the customer has an infinite amount of tolerance and isn't going to get annoyed and leave themselves.

Two very flawed notions that are extremely incorrect, hence why we are where we are now when it comes to the capcha issues.

I have a captcha solver (paid) and it genuinely surprises me how quick and efficient they are at defeating the purposes of a captcha . Have a bad IP? Expect the long and difficult version of the captcha, but the solver will go through it with high (but not perfect) success.

Its a visual aid to quietly soothe concerns from people who dont understand technology but want to pretend like they do. Which is a very large portion of the market of online users. Its cheap, easy to make and install on a website, and is something the company can point to and say "Look at all the security we have put in place to secure your info! No bots can break this!"
