The political situation at US-American campuses has been developing quickly, with some claiming that Trump’s actions are signs of fascism, dictatorship, or authoritarianism. Today I have a quick summary of what has happened in the past weeks.

While I love academia and research, the university where I work disallowed non-college-level courses from being taught, but it maintained the same standards for enrollment. This meant we got a huge wave of students with middle-school levels of math proficiency for whom we now have to _pretend_ are college ready. I never thought I would have to teach basic fractions in a college math class.

One need only read the comment section under Sabine's videos to see that US "progressives" and "conservatives" live in entirely different universes.

Carl Sagan’s quote from my favorite book:
“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...

The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance” ― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

The ban on masks was aimed at demonstrators wearing masks to prevent identification, not medical masks.

It is safe to say that politics have already had a very negative effect on science.

A friend of mine is a department head in the US. Her research is mainly about helping people to recover from stroke. The government has cut off NIH funding, and the University is funding affected departments but that cannot go on indefinately.

As a wheelchair user I am extremely offended to be compared to a dirty filthy multiverse believer

This is a great reminder to be critical of experts on issues outside of their expertise.

It is always interesting to see how some of the loudest bullies are actually cowards.

"People with disabilities, like being blind, or needing a wheelchair, or believing in a multiverse." 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for the video!!

The definition of Fascism from Merriam-Webster (see below): In simplest terms, fascism refers to a specific way of organizing a society: under fascism, a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people in that society, and allows no dissent or disagreement. This dictionary defines the term in full as:

1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

Gov has no business giving billions to private schools which charge over 80k$ just tuition. As well Schools have no business in social engineering. I just got a master from one of the top 10 US universities, and the Ethics course class was mind boggling one, full of DEI (basically what DEI boils down to is that qualifications should not be on individual's merits but on what sounds good for a mixture as a whole society )

It should be mandatory to define the word fascism before any discussion, because lately that word has been used uncritically as a label for any opinion or behavior that does not agree with the opinion of the one doing the labeling.

DEI is a minor issue in this debate. The fascism claims are more evident in the abuse of power towards political opponents, judges, law firms, the media, corporations, etc. It’s even more egregious (revolting, really) in the treatment of immigrants, some with legal status, who are denied due process and sent to torture prisons in El Salvador. This is a corrupt and evil administration the likes the US has never seen.

For Americans who didn’t get the joy of living through the Truss/Kwarteng budget, this is the point where the government starts to call the stock market left-wing and/or woke.

I like how everybody talks about the crackdown over student and prof. involved in university protests, but nobody mentions what were the protests about..
But what can I expect from a German.

Dear Sabine, please stay with analysis of science topics and science papers. You are truly contributing there. This and similar videos show surprisingly superficial understanding of US politics.

The pendulum swings way too hard both ways by design, unfortunately. Corporations have figured out (for about 2 decades now, centuries if we're being completely honest) that fear and panic fuel sales like nothing else. Algorithms now feed a firestorm of terror into the minds of everyone who "had a device since birth"... and it works. It works so, so very well. Profits are insane and depression and anxiety are at all-time highs never seen before in "pre-social media algorithm civilization".

While we all sit waiting in fear for the "Terminator robots" to remove humanity from the planet, we all fail to see that algorithmic bots online have already been removing our humanity since around 2007 or so 😢😢

Again... profits have never been higher... so it's all "worth it" 💸💸
