TOP 20 Scariest Tornado Videos Ever Recorded

Most tornadoes can be scary, especially the violent tornadoes that we see reduce homes to bare slabs in some instances. These beasts can kill entire families, annihilate neighborhoods, and change cities forever. Nowadays, we can record these monstrous storms and see a first person perspective on how devastating they can be. But what are some of the most frightening tornado videos recorded? This video will showcase them.

This is a video that is based solely on my opinion, though I believe these are some truly scary tornado vids. The factors, for me at least, in ranking these videos were either the tornado's intensity or its looks, or both.

I couldn't actually use some of the videos I wanted due to them copyrighted, but I found equivalent videos that to me are just as scary. Please enjoy!

A friend of mine was a teacher in Tuscaloosa the day that tornado hit. She was responsible for about 20 kids. As she was herding the kids down to the basement, she looked out the window and saw the tornado coming right at them. I would have died of fright, but she got every child down and made sure they were safe. She's a hero in my eyes.

#1 is not only anxiety inducing, but when it actually hits, the sweeping of everything into the black, coupled with the audio, is truly nightmare fuel. #1 stays with you a while after you see it the first time. To actually see it approaching and know there is nowhere to go is utterly terrifying. R.I.P. Mrs Schultz.

#9 That's the guy I want with me when dookie hits the fan... I smiled when he said, "everyone just stay calm; don't scare the kids" in such a calm yet authoritative voice. What a great guy!

The sound in #1 as his nervous breaths began to be drowned out by the ferocity of those winds.... really did a number on me.... and that's just watching it! I can't even begin to imagine what that felt like filming it.

#7 gave me nighmares when I saw the clip the first time. People who shout "I love you" to each other because they believe they are going to die 😨

Everyone is talking about footage #1 because it’s the most circulated clip. Personally #14 with those people huddled out in an open parking lot while an SUV precariously slides close to them is more frightening than anything. Absolutely no cover.

My daughter & I barely survived the Joplin EF-5 tornado 🌪️ in May of 2011. I’ll never forget it & how horrific it was; especially the aftermath & trying to help / save people who were severely injured & in shock. It truly felt like Hell on Earth. Wow, number 1 was really a bit of a flashback. It's not just the visuals, but the sound that got me. Until now, I've never really heard that terrifying sound adequately captured or reproduced. Anyone who has been close to a tornado can tell you it's a sound you'll never forget. It's a grinding, roaring sound that's almost deafening. People often claim it's like standing next to a moving freight train times 100.

Ahhh yes, #14. One of my all time favorite tornado videos. The level of terror that family must've been going thru is tremendous. And how incredibly lucky they were to have lived thru it. They were literally almost smashed with their own vehicle. Instead it stops mere inches from them, and then it becomes a protective barrier blocking other debris from hitting them. That was unbelievably fortunate. That clip is right up there with the famous "Clem Schultz" video.

#7 you can hear the classic freight train rumble of the approaching EF5. That’s a sound that’s not captured very often.

The legend Clem Schultz, the man with balls of steel. Staring death in the face and not even flinching. Fairdale is a tiny town, only around 3-4 blocks or mostly older 1920's era farm style homes. Nearly 60% of the homes were wiped flat, many others sustained significant damage. I lived east of there in Hampshire IL, and this stormed rocked the whole community. Clems video is still widely considered to be the scariest raw tornado video ever recorded, and in my opinion will be very hard to top. Epic first hand and up close views of what a massive storm looks and sounds like.
