However, the tides are turning, and for the first time ever, an all-electric vehicle has claimed the top spot in global sales rankings. Tesla's Model Y surpassed Toyota's best-selling models, the RAV4 and Corolla, to become the top-selling car worldwide in the first quarter of 2023. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the significant price difference between the Model Y and Toyota's offerings. With a starting price of $47,490, the Model Y is considerably more expensive than the Corolla ($21,550) and RAV4 ($27,575).

Analyst data from Jato Dynamics reveals the impressive performance of the Model Y in the first quarter of the year. It sold 267,200 units globally, outpacing the Corolla's 256,400 units and the RAV4's 214,700 units. This represents a remarkable increase of approximately 69 percent compared to the same quarter the previous year. Notably, the Model Y experienced substantial sales growth of 68 percent in the United States and became the top-selling vehicle in Europe.

In contrast, the Toyota Corolla, a long-standing favorite among consumers worldwide, saw a decline in sales. Despite offering a range of body types, including sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks, the Corolla recorded a downward trend with sales of 256,400 units. This includes a 29 percent drop in sales in China and a 10 percent decline in the United States.

Elon Musk is the music instruments salesman in the movie _The Music Man._ He successfully stampeded the world into believing that EV's are the solution to the problem of vehicular-generated air pollution. Somehow, no one seems to have asked how the _incremental demand for electricity_ that EVs inevitably generate is to be met. It better be done by generating _green energy._ If the answer is by building more coal-fired electricity generating plants, all we'd succeed in doing is to replace the cars' tail pipes with the smoke stacks of electricity plants as the sources of vehicular air pollution. It's possible that some think tank somewhere has done the sums. I haven't seen any such studies anywhere so far.

Electric Cars need Tax subsidies to sell cars. it couldn't be the $7500 EV Tax Credit could it? Put that Toyota on a level field and see who sells more cars.

Elon's a showman, but knows nothing about vehicles. People are buying his cars because they've somehow become a sign of status, but if you want reliability and longevity go with a Toyota, especially the older models with the 1.8 L engines. I have a friend who bought a tesla. He said it was a piece of crap and broke down. He sold it and bought a non-EV.

Time will tell - Ford and GM are at a much higher risk than Toyota. Four of the top ten best selling vehicles last year were Toyota. Hybrids are outselling BEV's in Europe and the US. Hybrids are also popular in China. Toyota is helping the vehicle transition by providing hybrids at a lower cost than BEV's and without the need for any infrastructure for the customers or governments. Toyota's end game is hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Time will tell.
