The reason I look old is because I have a very rare genetic disorder. We all have a gene that regulates our growth hormone. That’s why most people age at more or less the same rate. But, for some reason, my gene does not control my growth in the same way. As a result, my body grows four times faster than it’s supposed to. When I was just a year old, I looked like I was 4. And when I was five, people thought I was 20. At eleven, I looked like a forty year old woman. And now that I’m fifteen, I already look like I’m sixty. Because of this, I’ve had a very unusual life. How do you live when you look 4 times older than you really are? That’s what I want to tell you about.

I read an article in New York Magazine where a celebrity mentioned that he suffered from a genetic form of precocious puberty. His great grandfather had it too and at age 11 looked like he was 25 years old. At the time it was 1918 and all the young men aged 17 to 30 were signing up to go fight in World War One over in Europe. As a result his great grandfather became one of the youngest US soldiers in the Army after he showed up at the induction center and insisted on enlisting. His mother came and tried to get him to go home but being a woman was told to leave and no one believed that he was only 11. He survived the trenches and later came home a war hero.
