my 180L actually turned into an accidental blackwater lol! I chucked in a load of wood and the water is kinda dark now, the tetras and rams love it and so do I, so natural! c:

I really do appreciate the fact that you take fish keeping and aquascaping and strip it down to the basic essentials. I have just gotten into this recently, and the HUGE amount of opinions and aggression towards each other in this hobby is astounding. It seems like everyone has their own opinion and they believe that only they are the only ones who are correct. You are great at sharing your own story and letting the audience choose their own path. I know my fish keeping skills will greatly improve from watching your journey.

I HIGHLY recommend this set up for pea puffers!! Most success I've had, no sign of illness or stress so far

Bought a fluval flex 15 and started my first planted aquarium with neon tetras, just because of this channel. Definitely the center piece of our living room.

I recently changed my 5-gallon planted nano tank to a blackwater setup, and I absolutely love it for every single reason you mentioned! Thanks MD!

I at first did not like the black water then I got fed up of doing the huge water changes and just accepted it. Got some Neons and Glowlights and yes they do pop more. I also found that it makes the albino fish pop too like the bristle nose plecos. So if you want to do a black water tank I would recommend looking at the albinos.

I have a blackwater by accident. Got around to re setting up my 30gal that has been in storage for almost a decade, decided to do a soil capped with my aquarium gravel I saved to make it easier for live planting. The soil immediately released a tonne of tannins and ammonia. Finally have the filter almost cycled and established 3 weeks later (there was a lot of ammonia) and now that the murkiness of the water cleared up to reveal a clear but dark environment I rather like it. I have many plants they are growing up to the top and creating some nice natural dark spots at the bottom. Should be ready to introduce fish this weekend. My question is, knowing the tannins will eventually dissipate, what is the best way to keep the tannin level up when the water starts to "clear" without completely disturbing the aquascape? I rather like the natural look of the water and would hate for it to "clear up".

black water is good for water condition is because tannings are acidic, which is the result of fluvic acid and other acid leaking out into the water column. When the water is acidic, ammonia turns into NH4+, which is harmless to fishes, unlike ammonia.

I was really debating on making my 55g pea puffer tank into black water with a small amount of plants along the back like bacopa but I already ordered more plants lol.

I just started my tank a few days ago. The rocks and the wood I used even though I washed well they still relelased tannis in the water and I changed all the water once to clear it up but after seeing this I might let it be 😅😅 . I still don’t have fish in it just plants but I’m planning to have a tetra with a few tank mates 🧐

Cat-tail reeds are the single best plant to put into any tank.

I am just starting out with my first tank bcuz I fell in love with the red witch pleco."Roter Hexenwels" in German. And I read that they prefer a blackwater tank so my question would be if you agree with that or not? And also is blackwater something I should start out with? The tank is a 160x40x40 to house a max of 4 plecos and some shrimps and snails.

I have a blackwater tank for my betta fish and I just set up a 55 gal community aquarium that is going to be blackwater once my driftwood starts releasing tannins.
