Cyclone Remal: Heavy rainfall lashes West Bengal, NDRF teams on for relief and rescue operations

As heavy rain and gusty winds persist in Kolkata following the landfall of severe cyclonic storm 'Remal,' efforts are underway to mitigate its impact.
“Two people have been killed since Cyclone Remal made landfall on Sunday night," Kamrul Hasan, secretary of Bangladesh's disaster management ministry, told AFP.
The Kolkata Municipality team and Kolkata Police Disaster Management team are actively involved in clearing uprooted trees, particularly in the Alipore area of the city. Late-night visuals depicted workers diligently striving to clear roads amidst ongoing rainfall.
As reported by ANI, Priyabrata Roy, DC South Kolkata, said, “We are getting the information that in some places, trees have been uprooted, in those areas, Kolkata Municipality team, Kolkata Police Disaster Management team, have reached and work is underway. The uprooted trees will be cut and cleared soon so that the roads can be opened. By morning, situation will be okay...Police's special unified control room is monitoring the situation throughout the night, in the wake of the cyclone. Municipality Control Room is also opened."
“The Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Remal' crossed the Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal Coasts between Sagar Islands and Khepupara close to southwest of Mongla near Latitude 21.75°N and Longitude 89.2°E," said IMD in a post on X.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed a total of 14 teams in the state. These teams are on standby to assist in rescue and relief operations.
As a precautionary measure, West Bengal evacuated over 1 lakh people from vulnerable areas of the state to safety.
“The Severe Cyclonic Storm 'Remal' over the North Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards, with a speed of 13 kmph during past 06 hours, crossed Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal Coasts between Sagar Islands and Khepupara close to southwest of Mongla," said IMD in a post on X on Monday morning.
After making landfall between the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts on Sunday night, the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ began moving northwards and is continuing to do so, gradually weakening on Monday, May 27, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
