Cyclone Remal: Flights & Trains Cancelled In West Bengal, Thousands Evacuated
The coastal regions of India’s West Bengal and Odisha states are bracing for the landfall of cyclone Remal. The cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall at midnight on May 26th. This is the first pre-monsoon cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. Thousands of people have been evacuated to safety in West Bengal state. Hundreds of flights have been suspended in the wake of the cyclone which has led to the cancellation of trains as well. The India Meteorological Department says Odisha is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. India’s neighbouring country, Bangladesh, is also bracing for the cyclone. The authorities in Bangladesh have set up at least 4,000 shelters, while over 78,000 volunteers are on duty to alert and help people in the coastal regions.
