The chlor-alkali industry uses brine to produce chlorine, sodium hydroxide , and hydrogen. An electric current is passed through the brine, to form hydrogen gas at the negative electrode and chlorine gas at the positive electrode, leaving a solution of sodium hydroxide.

*Proper defination for chlor-alkali process (to write as answer for exams)*

*On passing electricity through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (Nacl)(brine), it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide, hydrogen gas and chlorine gas. This process is known as chlor-alkali process as we obtain NaOH which is an alkali and chlorine gas in this reaction, here, chlorine is produced at anode and hydrogen is produced at cathode.*
