Das Lied der Deutschen (meestal Das Deutschlandlied, Duitslandlied, genoemd) is een patriottisch Duits drinklied uit de 19e eeuw. Sinds 1922 is het in gebruik als het Duitse volkslied. Vanaf 1952 werd echter alleen het derde couplet gezongen. Sinds 1991 vormt dit ene couplet het volkslied. Als volkslied geniet het bijzondere wettelijke bescherming tegen smaad.

Prachtig lied. Wir lieben Deutschland.

Ja het is en blijft een prachtige melodie, geen wonder want van Joseph Haydn en ik moet zeggen dat de tekst van het 3e couplet gewoon mooi is. Het eerste couplet kan natuurlijk niet meer na WO2 en het tweede couplet is eigenlijk echt een drinklied. Dus horen we nu altijd alleen maar het derde couplet.

There are no other stanzas, no political correctness here. The melody by Joseph Haydn served as the hymn for the Austrian emperor, a country that has disappeared just like the German empire mentioned in the words that some of the people below were expecting apparently. Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote a new text to Haydn's music, which had to do with the founding of Germany from various kingdoms (an 'over all' structure) and not with more recent stages in history, which have made the hymn sound inappropriate ever since. This is the official hymn of the present nation, in this form since 1991. If you read the text properly, you'll notice it's not a bleak compromise, but a very impressive call for high morals, prosperity and happiness for the people that are bound in a land with an eventful history.
