Why You Don't Need the Sandwich Method for Retinol

The sandwich method is not necessary for the majority of retinol products due to their formulation or strength.

Let's examine a few popular examples:

The Ordinary's 1% Retinol in Squalane: This product is formulated with squalane, an oil that acts as a buffer. It allows the retinol to absorb more slowly, and the moisturizing properties of squalane make the product gentler. As a result, the sandwich method isn't useful for such oil-based formulations.

Cerave Retinol Serums: Using the sandwich method for formulations with a strength of less than 0.3% retinol might render the product ineffective. Therefore, I advise against doing this for optimal results.

Retinol Application Guide:

Cleanse the face with a non-exfoliating acid cleanser suitable for your skin type.
Pat the skin dry using a clean towel.
Apply 3-4 drops or a pea-sized amount of retinol, avoiding sensitive areas like the eyelids, corners of the eyes, corners of the nose, and lips.
Wait a few minutes to allow for absorption.
If necessary, apply a moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
