Training Pecan Trees, Part 1

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Bynum family—owners of Arbuckle Mountains Pecans in Springer, Oklahoma—were unable to properly train their trees when first planted. Now, they are playing catch up. With the help of the Noble Research Institute, Mike and Valerie Bynum are retraining their trees through pruning, grafting, and patience. During a tour of this orchard at the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Conference, Senior Pecan Specialist Charlie Graham explains how Mike Bynum is using grafting to retrain this tree to a central leader.
