This is 100% true and totally explains my experience. A year and a half ago, we went to a Toyota dealership with the intention of getting the Hybrid Camry. We asked for that, and voila! Over the MSRP fees and various other fees. Then, after paying $1000 (just to ensure a car was sent to the dealership), they told us, 'It'll be here in 6 months.' (Funny, they said 3 BEFORE signing.)

We waited 6 months, but nothing. We checked some international logistics pages that confirmed Camrys were taking a year and a HALF to get to dealerships. Frustrated, we decided to try Tesla. It turned out to be the most painless car sale EVER—no hassle, no lies, just price and info. We got our car in a few days, and now we drive it. We've had 2 minor problems since we got it, and they sent the mechanic to my house.

Oh, by the way, the look on the face of the car salesman when we went there to ask for the $1000 back, riding in our Tesla was priceless. Also, we got our tax return this year!

This why msrp is meaningless in the US. These dealer markups are rampant at all dealerships and leaves a real sour taste in the mouths of the potential buyers. IMO

Not only Toyota, all US dealers mark up everything they can....I had to spend 5 hrs at a Ford dealer in California to get my Mustang mach E...while my wife spent only 10 minutes to get her model Y, no mark-up, no hassle, no add-on...Tesla even picks the lowest interest loan for you.

It’s free market. The consumers have to blame themselves for willing to buy marked up vehicles.

Like #1 here, Yeyyy, I am sure Toyota Co hates dealers as much as consumers do, in N.A. Wish we could purchase directly from the manufacturer, on their web site. It gets even worst in Canada, as dealers are holding back current inventory and claiming shortages on Covid and chip manufacturing issues and other stuff. However in reality, they just want to take advantage of you as much as possible. Honda dealers are no exception from this.

Same thing is happening in the Philippines

Consumer law in Australia does not allow companies to mark up prices that are already advertised. They must sell it at the advertised price.
This includes car dealers.

Shame on Toyota for not direct selling to customers.

Great Video Sam! I totally Agree. I had to buy a fuel pump for my sons 4 gen prius. 1, 000 dollars! They charge at least 145/hr. labor. Pass. Love Tesla!

Basically all nonTesla dealerships do this.

Dealers are making more per vehicle than the manufacturer and blame Toyota for this too. I couldn't get a 4runner prime a couple years ago so I bought a Tesla model YLR and never looked back.

IMO, DONT BUY ANYTHING marked up or on "Shortage". They are manufacturing these shortages because people are paying the price.

it's very common in US for nearly all non-Tesla dealership to markup popular models. Hyundai dealers have been doing the same despite the manufacturer has offered enticing promotions on their 'official' website multiple times.

The manufacturer cannot dictate what a dealer does relative to setting a retail price.

Well its simple. Don’t buy from an dealer marking up the price. Go elsewhere and buy something else. They will soon get the message.

Delerships are a concept which needs to go away. Dealerships are really resellers they commit to buying a bunch of cars. If a certain model is hot they want to profit; if it is cold they want to dump it. Decades ago; this was how you could check out a car, kick the tires, order options. With the internet; this is an out of date concept; and it is entrenched. If the new Prius is in demand in Seattle; it may be hard to sell in Dallas, so you go to Dallas to buy it.. Some areas only want pickup trucks.

Last year at LA car show they introduced the "new" Prius hybrid. It is more expensive than a fully electric Tesla, still using outdated fossil fuels poison technology and the stupid complication of both gasoline and electric in one vehicle.

I went to look at a Toyota Prius Prime and first they didn't have one, then tried to sell me something else with what they called a market adjustment, ( price above MSRP ) the conversation with them ended right there. ( They will figure it out )

I have a friend who wanted the RAV4 PHEV here in Southern California and asked her how long it took to buy it. She said it was there on the lot, but she had to pay an extra $6, 500 above MSRP for it. Criminal. For me, I ordered my Tesla Y LR in August and there was no haggling, bought it online. Great vehicle and it costs me pennies a mile to drive.

This is the reason I'm done with stealerships. Thankful so much for proper vertical integration options that remove them completely from the car buy experience. Bye bye Mr Stealer.
