All drummers have a signature style and sound, but can you identify them by hearing only? Today, in the drum department, we're going to test our ears and our familiarity with our favorite drummers by stripping it down to just their sound. as a drummer and music nerd, this episode was a blast. had so much fun guessing.

Part 2? This should be its own series, you got something great there. It's fun and instructional both on an instrument level, and on a musical culture one. Younger players might want to check out some of the awesome stuff that was on display here.

This was a blast, seriously. I donโ€™t think most drummers pick their favorite drummer based on solos or technicality, we just *feel* what grooves closest to us

Stewart Copeland was so immediate for me. He's one of the most unmistakable drummers of all time

The John Otto Sound is so identifiable. Anyone who has heard the "My Generation" intro has that drum sound imbedded in their brain! Loved this

I love hearing isolated drum tracks. Hearing the little feel things. Beautiful.

Exposes just how individual and incredible John Bonham was to drumming

Achilles Last Stand was Bonham and Jones challenging Page to keep up. It's like both are leading the Greek Army to victory. To me, the best rhythm section in rock and roll.

Mike Derosier is criminally underrated, always thought he was the closest to Bonham Iโ€™ve ever heard

This has potential to go for 100 + episodes, keep em coming!

As a non-drummer, this was incredibly interesting & informative. Though all drumeo posts seem to be pretty epic even if one doesn't play. So great work & many thanx

The first drummer that came to mind for me as someone I could identify easily is Brann Dailor from Mastodon. His snare roll fills are instantly recognizable and he does them in pretty much every song.

When you said, "It's not John Bonham" before you even played Barracuda, I knew it was Derosier. LOL (my favorite) Fun fact: On Barracuda, he whittled down a gong mallet, attached it to his pedal, and used it for a bass drum beater (on a 26" bass drum). Huge sound! Thanks for including him!

9:35 Recognized it after a couple seconds, identified it as Keith Moon after about 10 seconds
12:00 Didn't know that one
14:44 After about 15 seconds I guessed Chad Smith, was incorrect
17:15 Didn't know that one either; didn't even recognize it with the whole song
20:12 Dang, didn't get it, but I at least knew the song
22:58 Not that one either, recognized the band (can't quite remember the name) but not the song
26:45 Another one I didn't know, but recognized it with the mix
30:30 Vaguely recognized it... but mistook it for something else, didn't recognize the song itself
35:12 Nope, neither drums, song, nor band
42:17 Didn't identify it, know the song though

Dang, I was _really_ hoping Danny Carey, Gavin Harrison, or Matt Cameron would show up somewhere

To push the Michael Derosier (Heart) and Bonham comparison further, that drum part in Barracuda is very similar to Bonhamโ€™s in Immigrant Song, just much faster. I was honestly surprised that wasnโ€™t the comparison used after the reveal.

John Bonham and Michael Derrosier both played Ludwig drums, so, I'm betting the sounds are similar because of a huge bass drum sound. That 26" Ludwig kick is something you FEEL.

As a drum nerd myself, I'm _soooo_ glad you guys threw us a bone!

Oh, one more thing... if you guys had a blast with "officer Copeland", you should definitely check out one of my drumming heroes, a Brazilian guy named Joรฃo Barone.

He's the drummer for Os Paralamas Do Sucesso, whose sound identity drips with ska/reggae/pop influence... and a ton of nods to The Police and Stu, as a testament to Barone being a huge fan! Even their Tama signature snares are almost identical!
