Thank you for your insight. This is an issue that's been brought up by a few different higher level math teachers. As you pointed out, PEMDAS is used in lower grade levels (our target audience for this particular video), but GEMDAS is a more accurate acronym. We had a chance to meet Lora Kermode, who has a program called GEMDAS that she uses in schools here in California. We've thrown around the idea of doing a PEMDAS remix using GEMDAS. Who knows, you might see a GEMDAS video from us soon!

Where can I get the whole video on order of operations? I have shown this for a long time. I met you Lamar Queen at NC middle school math conference and you gave me a cd; which I have misplaced in moving classrooms. Thirty third year of teaching I and I still LOVE using your videos.

The problem I have with PEMDAS is the P for parentheses. It is introduced in early grades this way because students haven't yet been introduced to other grouping symbols, such as absolute value and radicals. But in later grades it is important to remember that the P stands for ALL grouping symbols. I find myself having to re-teach order of operations to 9th and 10th graders, and I teach it as G E MD AS. G = grouping symbols. MD go together (left to right). AS go together (left to right.)
