Acoustic Guitars (Episode 2 of 3). David talks about and plays the twelve and six string Martin acoustic guitars that he wrote and recorded the classic ‘Wish You Were Here’ on and how yet again he was the victim of an opportunistic guitar thief.

"It's just a really, really lovely guitar". David tells us about his custom blue 1957 Fender Stratocaster.

When I was around thirteen I was spending some time in Montana with my grandparents. I happened to wake up around two in the morning to behold the Aurora Borealis. I pushed Dark Side into the eight track and was forever transformed. Animals has and always will be my favorite from Pink Floyd. I've learned to play and will always be grateful for the inspiration. Thank you David for sharing you with us.

Interviewer: The acoustic... I mean, I think it's possible to say that the acoustic on Wish You Were Here may be some of the most beautifully-recorded and lovely sounding acoustic-guitar playing ever committed to tape.

Dave Gilmour: Yeah.

I have very fond memories of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd. As a kid I remember jamming my a.m. transistor radio against my ear with the volume knob dimed. The first album I purchased was dark side of the moon. As soon as it came out I had to have it. I was 10 at the time. Start to finish I wore that album out. Having picked up a Guitar later in life I appreciate Mr Gilmour's playing. It is both simple and complex at the same time. The music travels from his head to his fingers quite seamlessly. Along the way it seems to detour through his soul. Thank you Mr Gilmour for all your hard work. You sir are a treasure.

David please continue to be present in the music community after the auction. I’m a young guy who plays guitar and dream of seeing you live but I’m afraid that you’re done touring after the auction. If that’s the case, then I’ll take my losses. But please, please stay active. I need you. We need you!

Dogs remains one of my favourite pieces of acoustic guitar music from Gilmour. It's a challenge to play, especially if you try to keep it in standard tuning, but the chords and strumming pattern are so delightfully phrased. The first refrain after that first solo is all so subtle and organic - the dogs barking in the background after Wright's keyboard fades, a hint of fret buzz, and then we launch into the next epic solo. It's a song that for my mind is quintessentially Pink Floyd - that perfect mix of an infusion of blues, jazz, gospel, and rock, juxtaposed with observant and dark lyrical themes which provokes mood and thought. Few bands have done it so well.... It's worth checking out a couple of his other great acoustic licks from his solo stuff, Murder, and also Near the End. Lost for Words from the last big studio album The Division Bell contains great acoustic solo work.
