Toast Hawaii was introduced in Germany in 1955 and ever since has become a staple of our culinary culture. Easy, quick, and cheap but still soooo gooood!

Aloha from Hawaii! I grew up in Germany for a bit as one of the many US military brats in the 1980's. My mother was introduced this by a German neighbor, and we loved it! Flash forward to my teenage years, and we end up in Honolulu in 1994. I stayed, and made Hawaii my home. I am currently making this dish for my wife and I after stumbling upon your channel. Thank you for bringing back the memory. Mahalo.

Toast Hawaii brought back good memories. This meal was served when I trained with the Bundeswehr at Stetten akM, 1988.

I never thought of putting this on toast. I love the combination of pineapple and ham on pizza.

I love this recipe. My family would also sometimes use Munster cheese - it melts and bubbles really nicely if you put it under the broiler. Everyone should try this at least once.

When I was working in our bakery/cafe, I often liked to make a variation of this which was buttered bread, ham, cheese and pineapple then another slice of buttered bread ie, a sandwich and then put it in the sandwich press/grill it would squish down the sandwich and heat it from both sides at once. its just a pressed toasted sandwich really but the way the sandwich press compacts the sandwich and heats the sandwich through evenly that makes it really nice. These days I would include the addition of sweet pickle spread and use a ham steak rather than sliced ham as its much thicker and similar thickness to the pineapple.

Looks good. It has a 50s vibe for sure. I have a cookbook published by Auburn University in Alabama from the 50s. Many different types of recipes than what we know today.

Growing up in Ohio during the 60s my mother would make these. She used fried spam instead of ham.

When I was growing up my Omi used to make these for my birthday lunch..but not with mayonnaise. She used butter only...may I ask of the mayo is a regional thing or just what you and your family enjoy? It sure looks amazing and I think I'll make this tomorrow for lunch since the sister-in-law is here with us and she loves pineapple
