In this video i review several types of drawing pencils but mainly focus on the Rotring lead holders that i have recently been using in my sketchbook videos. I talk about wood pencil and lead density as well as the mechanical pentel 500 5.0 pencil i have used for years.

Hi sketchytrav, rotring lead holders usually have a built-in sharpener. It's in the cap.

Another name for the lead holders is "clutch pencil, " for people who might be searching the web for them (they just drop leads rather than advancing when you click the end). Alvin makes several reasonably priced versions of these for 2.0mm leads. I love these things, and have several loaded up with different hardnesses Some companies make several identical holders except that the end (where an eraser would be on a conventional mechanical) is differently colored, so you can make the white end your hardest lead, the green or blue a mid tone, and the black end the softest lead. Or wrap the end with tape and write the hardness on it.

You can also get chunky 5.6mm clutch pencils, and in addition to holding giant graphite leads, they can also hold charcoal or sanguine leads, both "dry" and "oil." The oil ones are a bit like grease pencils, in that they never smudge — nor can they really be erased. I love them for quick sketching. Both Cretacolor and Koh-i-Noor make a variety of these 5.6mm leads. These bigger holders sometimes have a screw-off sharpener built into the end.

There are also 3.0/3.2mm lead holders and leads, again with different graphites and colors, but I've never used those. They seem less common than the 2.0s and 5.6s. Caran d'Ache, I believe, makes a color set but it's stupid expensive.

I use the Stadetler's exclusively now. Not only are the lead holders nice to draw with, there isn't any pesky issues with broken leads like the wood encased pencils. I have carpal tunnel and one year my hand hurt so bad using a manual sharpener, it was hard to draw. My sweetie bought me a lead holder, and that's all I use now. The sharpening is so easy and the leads are surprisingly strong...I haven't broken one yet! Plus you can get a lot of great shading laying it on it's side, which is more difficult with a regular pencil. Great Video!! TFS! Those Rotring's look awesome!!!!

This two rotring are exactly the same just different color and texture, here in Italy they both cost 45€ retail and around 28/35€ on amazon.

I'm going to assume your pretty new to leadholders. that little bit that you broke off is to stop the lead from falling out of the holder.for some holders like the staedtler Technico you can load it from the back, so idk if the one you have is like that, but I suggest to keep them on if your holder doesn't dispense in steps, but all at once.

I bought one of those GraphGear pencils last year. I don't like it much. A few months before that, I bought a KOH-I-NOOR "Mephisto" 0.7 and love it. I've used Staedtler 2 mm lead holders for years. The sharpener I use is bigger and more cylindrical than the one Travis has in this video. I might have to try that Rotring Rapid Pro!

Hey. That rotting rapid pro has a built in lead sharpener. Pull the cap off. It’s kinda hard to pull it off but u can use the cap to sharpen the lead

Not sure if this has been said but you can also get colored lead for normal mechanical pencils in .3 and .5. really great for prelim sketches and a cheaper alternative, led holders can get ridiculous.

Great vid! I am all there with you and converted to mechanical a year or so ago. Like you, I love their portability and unencumbered access. I have the 2mm sharpener that you showed (just got it). It fits so nicely into a travel pack. But I do use the lead sharpener when it is nearby.

Have you tried the 6mm lead holders yet? My daughter brought me one back from Italy. It is actually what got me switching from traditional pencils.

Also, is the white in your images a lead, or are you still using pencils for highlights? I heard the break easily so most ppl don't use the white.

Thanks so much. Love your vid choices.
