In Philadelphia, it’s hard to make it anywhere without passing a restaurant that serves the city’s most famed culinary creation: the cheesesteak. Several spots are loved by both city natives and out-of-towners, but locals know Jim’s South Street as one of Philly's well-respected originals.

Jim's serves Philly cheesesteak the classic way, complete with Cheez Whiz, onions, and top round black Angus beef. It's been a go-to spot for cheesesteaks since 1939. Insider’s Taryn Varricchio headed to Jim’s to find out why locals say this South Street restaurant makes the best quintessential cheesesteak in Philadelphia.

Will Smith once said in The Fresh Prince: 'if the bag isn't soaked with grease and the sandwich isn't dripping grease it's not a philly cheesesteak'

Uncle Jimmy took me to Jimmy's back in 1995. He grew up in Philly and bragged it was the best. He passed in Nov of 2021 in Florida and was buried in Newark. Honoring him we stopped off at Jimmy's after the funeral Service and had a Philly. I chased it down with Yuengling, brewed by the America's Oldest Brewery. Here's to you Jimmy!

Jim's always been one of my favorites, definitely the best of the "tourist spots". For the next level you need to hit John's Roast Pork, Phillip's, Dalessandro’s. No such thing as the best in Philly. Theres a thousand little pizza joints that sling amazing steaks you'll never hear about

I went here over 10 years ago when a friend from Philly introduced me to cheese steaks. I was totally blown away. to this day I've never had one better and I remember this place like it was yesterday. I'm glad I don't live in Philly because I'd eat here every day and die of a heart attack lol

Jim’s is touristy and overpriced BUT, they do make a good cheesesteak, at least better than the other touristy spots. The thing is in Philly you can get a really good cheesesteak almost anywhere, so places like Jim’s, Pats, Genos, etc. aren’t much of a draw to locals unless you’re hammered late night and need sustenances.

Watched these guys make 50 cheese steaks with all different toppings in 8 minutes. It was insanely impressive

“The processed cheese product we all know and love”
30 seconds later: “i’m a bit skeptical about getting the whiz because i’m not familiar with it”

I remember my pops bringing me to Philly years back. Grew up in Toronto Canada eating cheesesteaks and always wanted to try the OG. We lined up around the block at Jim’s and man was it worth it. Still remember watching them cook it and eating it upstairs with the grease seeping thru the wrapping paper.

On tour with THE SIMPLETONS back in '96. We were playing The Middle East Cafe, and that afternoon we went to Jim's. I'll never forget that, and long to go back. Love Philly and the folks.

"The definition of a classic cheesesteak is our cheesesteak."
"We make ours a little differently though."
