What's Inside a Humble Heart?

"But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord sees not as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'” - 1 Samuel 16:7

What does God see when he looks into our hearts? Does he see a humble, contrite and broken heart, that he will not spurn?

Today Fr. Mike Schmitz shares a word of encouragement from the book of 1 Samuel for how to shape our hearts so that the Lord can be present to them and abide in them.

Father Mike, I’m so grateful that I listened to this tonight. I have a loved one who served as a deacon for 30 years in Sioux Falls diocese and now he’s suffering from Alzheimer’s. It’s brought many tears and rosaries for he and my sister his wife. When I visit, I speak about his past, that way he has memories he shares. It does make me feel brokenhearted and humble. I know, God loves both of them and me so that’s why I continue to go an hour and a half away to visit them. The trip helps me say one rosary up and a rosary back, which gives me comfort and courage. I went to visit my dad who has depression of late. The first night there I was overwhelmed with panic attacks. I didn’t want to stay because I was so physically weak the first night I was there and I couldn’t believe I was so selfish to not fight harder, as I was so scared I’d be a burden instead of help. The more I got scared the worst the attacks came and I caved even though he begged me not to leave. 25 hours later I left. My drive home was full of regret. I was so sorry to God that I couldn’t overcome for another’s burden especially my aging dad. I was so humbled. I’m sorry Jesus I didn’t say yes to such a great need.

And I keep doing something that takes me farther away from God, and I pray because I don't want to be that person, God doesn't want me to be that person. I need you, Lord.
