JUDY COLLINS & TOMMY MAKEM - 'The Great Selchie' HD 1992

Judy Collins is joined by Tommy Maken on the tin whistle in this performance of "The Great Selchie of Shule Skerry," taped in 1992 for the TV special Songs Of The Sea. Makem was a hero of Irish folk music, who had a thriving career both in the States and in the UK. For many years he toured with the Clancy Brothers. Born in Northern Ireland, he died in New Hampshire in 2007, at the age of 74.

I first heard Judy sing this song many, many years ago. I fell in love with it, learned the verse. Some songs remain old friends for life that greet you with the same warm smile whenever you meet.

Duncan Williamson, the Scottish gypsy storyteller, had a wealth of great Selkie stories that he told and some were written down. Also David Thompson's book, The People of the Sea is wonderful. Love this song.

Excellent ! Have you read "The Silkie" by the late canadian writer Van Vogt ? He is well known ("Slans", "The world of -A"...). This book derives from this "Selchie". I will ask a friend of mine for a version with renaissance lute accompaniment.
