Saving an old steel bicycle frame.

Short video showing the a steel bicycle frame being transformed. The Bob Jackson frame with Reynolds 531 tubing was from an epic fail video we recently did. The aluminium seat post had completely seized into the steel frame. After many hours trying to release it we finally gave in to caustic soda with reacted and melted the seat post. We then had the frame repainted and the results are stunning.

I hope that this video gives you some ideas, help and inspiration in your own bicycle projects. If you are new to the channel then please have a look around, we have many more vintage road bike restorations plus bicycle maintenance videos to help a long the way.

I have only read a few reviews across the pond. You are a genius and I appreciate your work. Sometimes we have to let a frame go. You are always my first choice and I love what you do.

I had tremendous success last year removing a very seized post using adjustable reamers. I snapped the head off the post trying to extract it with a winch device. From there, I cut to top nearly flush with the seat tube then went to town with the reamers and cutting oil. Took a good couple hours labor but it eventually wore so thin it broke free and came out. Cleaner method with no risk of burns etc. But only a last resort after trying more conventional methods.

Gorgeous Bob Jackson!
I first saw a Bob Jackson at the now destroyed Woodbridge outdoor velodrome in Ontario Canada. 55° banking!
Do you know the DeKerf brand of frames and bikes?
I have a deKerf 'Implant' which ive ridden out to the East coast twice. I broke a seatpost, couldnt get it out, so I hammered it down and put a new one in. Then, in a crazy coincidence, i snapped the new post, again at the frame entry point. So, this time i bought a steel pipe that fit in almost perfectly but I added some epoxy and a hose clamp. So i have three seatposts in the frame, and its the most solidly reinforced frame ever. Its a bit heavy but it works great. The pipe is stamped 'Africa' and it looks very hard- core. Love your videos!

I don't get it. At 3 seconds into this short video there seems to be a tear in the metal of the seat tube. How did you fix that?

Hello Andy
I really appreciate your effort
Only one comment
In the video doesn’t appear the most important, when the tube is removed

Is it a real restoration if steel and aluminium doesn’t bond together somewhere on the bike

So after doing all that damage you decided to use the best solution? It's a steel frame should have gone straight to caustic after rather than heating the frame with a blow torch. Bet it's warped and lost strength now.
