ok so you know me, I like Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Though it's definitely divided the fan base I fall on the side that thinks it was a rollercoaster ride that contained some of the best horror scenes in the MCU. Wanda was a great villain to me and watching this chase across several universes felt like one of the funnest rides I'd had in the marvel universe for a long time.

However things were originally gonna be different to what we got and if you cast your mind back to the phase 4 announcement then you'll remember Scott Derrickson was initially behind the project. He'd just come off the back of the original Doctor Strange movie and at the event he said they were gearing up to create the first horror movie in the MCU.

However Derrickson and the studio ended up parting ways over what was said to be creative differences. Though rumours flew around the project at the time that said Marvel were afraid of how far he was gonna go with it this has sort of been debunked. During an interview with Empire, Kevin Feige said that the studio still loves Scott and though no one really believes them, it was genuinely just down to creative differences.

Feige really said 'What Scott Derrickson'

Now since then Scott has gone on to direct the phenomenal Black Phone and it makes you wonder what his original plan was going to be.

Well we've bloody got it.

After sorting through leaks, interviews and what insiders close to the movie have said we've pieced together elements of what the original plan for the movie was supposed to be.

So join us as we take a trip through an alternate timeline in order to ask What If.

If you love the video 3000 then please hit the thumbs up button and make sure you subscribe because I'll love you in every universe. With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into the breakdown.

Now first up there was very much three versions of this film with the first one being Derricksons and then the plan with Raimi's both pre and mid pandemic. You might remember that Multiverse Of Madness was slated to release before No Way Home but that Sony ended up refusing to budge on their december release date which led to them swapping places.

America Chavez was originally going to be introduced in this film and then come No Way Home she'd be the person that pulled across Andrew and Tobey. This was shown in a lot of concept art for the film and it makes way more sense than having Ned discover he's a wizard.

I remember an interview of Benedict and Elizabeth saying "the only thing that remains from the original version of the movie is the title" which now makes sense.

I would have preferred a slower burn on Wanda's turn.

It sounds like this version would’ve been way better… having a slower arch to Wanda’s descent makes more sense, because in Sam Raimi’s version, it felt rushed!! Also having the original Mordo come back as well as seeing brother voodoo and nightmare would’ve been insane… Don’t get me wrong, having the Illuminati appear was pretty cool, but at the same time it was kind of wasted potential!!

The alternative ver sounds way better. It actually connects and makes WandaVision worth your watch.
Wanda's redemption, the prophecy, the kids everything pulled in this script. You do see the continuity.
The movie seriously had the potential to become greatest superhero movie. 😭😭

Honestly the opportunities missed with this movie is just unforgivable…

It would have made much more sense for Wanda to try redeeming herself from Westview, and then turn in the end. It would have tied things together much better.

I think the original story plan was similar to what everyone originally had in mind. Wanda starting out helping the heroes then becoming the bad guy in the latter act.

After hearing this original script/concept, the title of the movie makes much more sense, imo. After watching the movie we got, it should've just been titled "Doctor Strange in A Multiverse" or a different title entirely. Didn't really feel the ""Multiverse of Madness" concept while watching the film.

Although WandaVision ended with Wanda using/being corrupted by the Darkhold and “hearing” her lost sons… A scene where she learned of America Chavez’s powers (even in flashback) would have been the missing piece! Nightmare or Mephisto (as the rabbit from WandaVision) could have even had a cameo appearance as the source of the information…. And then been a “tease” for eventually fully appearing in another film. Nightmare makes the most sense with all the talk of dreams being peeks into other realities in the Multiverse!!

I hope scott comes back for Strange 3 I honestly just preferred his style and how he treated the character it’s honestly a shame we didn’t get to see it

This definitely should've been a longer film with more focus on Dr. Strange and America's characters and more universes.

This alternate script sounds way better than the movie we got

It sure had Madness but not much of the Multiverse part. Would've loved to see more of that

From the moment I saw the film I said that it would have been better to have Wanda turn after finding out her kids are real while helping Strange instead of some stupid dream. Now that I'm seeing everybody thought the same thing I'm wondering wtf was going through that guy's head.

Michael Whaldron is selfish and doesn’t understand what it means to be a writer when he said the words “my perspective was, why are we letting some other movie get the best villain ever?” That’s not how crafting characters works. I love Wanda to pieces and still do, especially after hearing Michael Whaldron speak those words. Wanda’s story could have made much more sense but this man single handedly fucked that up

I was bummed when Scott Derrickson left doctor strange because he's a pretty underrated horror director. The first doctor strange film was great and after watching Sinister and The Black Phone, it really makes me wonder what MOM could've been. We really could've gotten a good marvel film with a good story with some horror/thriller elements. I also feel like Derrickson understands doctor strange more than sam raimi.

That’s the problem I have with Disney. They hire great artists, but never wanna commit to vision they have in place. Back in 2012, they hired Michael Ardnt, the genius behind the scripts for “Little Miss Sunshine”, and “Toy Story 3”, to write the script for what would be become “The Force Awakens”. Things were going good, but Michael said he needed at least 3 years to make the best script he could possibly write, and Disney said “no”. That’s when J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan came in.

The original cut seemed like strange is more powerful instead of running away for the full movie using Chavez as a getaway car.

The Wanda slow burn makes actual logic sense. The fact that they chose to have her be that corrupt it in the first 20 minutes of the film made absolutely no sense. It would’ve been nice to actually continue to see the progression into the darkness with her and then towards the end see her go for villain, then it would’ve been earned
