Retro Duo Portable V2.0 - SNES, NES And Mega Drive Games Test

Here's some footage of the Retro Duo Portable running a selection of SNES games, as well as a NES and Mega Drive / Genesis game, using the special RetroPort and RetroGen adapaters. The RetroPort adapter comes bundled with the system, but the RetroGen costs extra.

As you can see, the performance is pretty good. The only issue we found was a flashing effect during Super Mario Kart, which is visible in the video.

Other than the cartridge wobbling, there's really nothing else wrong here besides one extra little thing. Be "certain" to turn the volume down all the way when not using a secondary sound source (like speakers/headphones/AV out/etc) and here's why: For some reason, the designers forgot to make the audio "seperate" from the video on the device, so having volume up at all without a connected audio device won't only distort the sound (on some games), but also jam up the device's main controls.

I love mine. My only two complaints are:
1) The d-pad that goes all the way down in the middle, even though the included controllers have good d-pads. Makes no sense. It's rarely an issue, but it can be.
2) Mine came with one dead pixel. Doh!

nice to see proper sound emulation in a non-official console

You "could" use one of the RetroBit controllers that comes with it by using the RetroBit SNES Controller USB connector, but then the system's not really "handheld" anymore now, isn't it? The home console features work "perfectly". I've had virtually no problems with this system home console features at all. Just be sure to plug in the AV out cable into the AV Out/Headphone port "after" turning the game on. For some reason, having it put in before turning the game on, doesn't seem to work.

Journey to Silius. A really good Hudsonsoft game with some really good music.

About the D-pad in v2.0 is it still messy like the first version? (if you press the center, all buttons activate) or did they fix it to act like a real SNES d-pad?

Yes the RDP v2.0 has an AV out, and it comes with AV cables

I have one of these babies, and it just so happens to be this exact same model. One thing I need to warn potential buyers on this product about: It "does" have some issues, however, for a handheld console that can play actual game cartridges, it's not that bad. One big thing you need to be careful about: Make certain the cartridges are put into the console nice and tightly, or else, when playing it on the go, if you accidently nudge the cartridge too much? It "will" crash your game.

How much is something like this worth now? Ebay listings are $200+ id like to see what the market really calls for these

I ain't a 90s kid, btw. I just love old games. So, one quick question- what's that Super Famicon game at 1:04? It looks like Castlevania to me, but I'm not sure…

You should've put the titles of the games at the bottom of the screen

Hey, awesome review!  Loved it!  Where can I buy this product and do you know offhand which games won't work with it?  Is there a list that someone has put out.  I would like this and the 2 controllers and the adapters for SNES, NES, Sega Gensis, GBA.  Thanks again.  Happy New Year, all the best....

Yes Super Famicom games are compatible with the RDP v2.0 . Plus, you don't need an adapter!

You can purchase one on Amazon in red that is about $68 with $9 shipping and it also comes with controllers. Rad Racer II doesn't work, And on 85% of the consoles available, Super Mario World, DKC 1, 2, and 3, and Star Fox.

This is a lovely little portable console. It looks great, seems to play great, and most of all... it WORKS. I wouldn't mind having one of these and taking it out for play in public just to turn some heads. XD

The RetroDuo Portable is just a portable RetroDuo, but it comes with A/V cables for use on a TV. The RD Portable is a better choice
