My husband had a gold fish he always did 100% water change and that goldfish ended up in his mum's outside pond and is still alive 6 years later

I find this quite alarming. My fancy goldfish are 6 years old and i have only ever done 100% changes. Whoops

I don't agree. 100% water changes are fine if the ph and temp match. In my 55 gallon i drain it twice a week. With goldfish you want to do a minimum of 50% a week. 25% just doesn't cut it.

I do 40%50% every 10 days I have never had any issues . 20% isn't enough for my 60 gallon . I have a bunch of fish . And doing large water changes doesn't effect your good bacteria as long as it's established . Water changes are good for the fish, the more you take out the more ammonia you remove. I did a 70% not long ago .

as long as the temperature is the same ur good and that u keep the water changes on a schedule. I do 60-75% changes on all my goldfish tanks.

I hope that this fish survived... or at-least didn't suffer long.

What a shame... We seek to have creatures of any/all nature to be part of our personal lives, with them only asking for us to properly care for them in return... and yet some of us fail at doing so for whatever reasons -- from the sad inability to, down to the plain infuriating neglect.

I swear, there should a economic check & psych test required before someone takes in a pet.

I only do 100% water changes when necessary and whenever I do do them, I allow my tank to go through the cycling process again just to be safe.

Depends on....the kind of fish, how many fish, tank size, plants or no plants, just depends every tank needs different maintenance

I do 50-60% weekly and 100% once a year and I have NEVER had a problem, if you think, especially with gold fish that 20% is acceptable there is something wrong. Goldfish are messy fish that need the top of the line filtration and big water changes

My fish are the happiest when I do almost 100% water changes? That fish is in like an inch of water, obviously it would seem sick

I had no choice but to do a 100% water change on my 75 gallon due to a canister filter leak. Had to move the tank and stand to dry and prevent mold. I did not remove the substrate and used the established media from the filter. Would I still need my tank to cycle?

I have never had issues with large changes. Allowing the new water to heat to the same temp is ideal. I remove enough so that the fish are still swimming with no part out of the water, but not much more. I do not remove and rinse gravel - a vac is sufficient, though I've not done one lately because my tank is dirted. Now, if you actually allow the tank to get bad before the change, yes, you can shock them, but if your biofilter is well- established and you don't go long between changes you're usually OK.

Do U have to put bacteria in the water everytime u do a water change

You should run a air hose line in the smaller tank to dissolve o2 in the water
