Calculating pi with a Synthesizer

Happy Pi Day! In this video, we're going to put an analog synthesizer to some use by having it calculate pi. To get the experiment to work, we'll need to learn about periodic functions, the Fourier Series, and the frequency response of resonant filters.

0:00 Periodic Functions
0:59 Fourier Series
3:03 Filters
4:45 The Experiment
5:39 Results

Fourier Series: Boas, Mathematical Methods for the Physical Science p.340-378
pi from filtered waves: Horowitz and Hill, The Art of Electronics p.435-455
pi in the Bible: 1 Kings 7:23-26

Extracting the sine from the square wave is something I’ve had to do at work. I’m an embedded software engineer and for a controller I had to write we were measuring what was essentially a square wave and we needed to feed as a sine wave into our controller, so we using a FIR filter to brick wall chop off the harmonics of the square waves fundamental. We knew the expected fundamental frequency, so we could tune the filter to cut off just how we wanted.

Genuinely baffling how small your audience is considering the quality of your content. You deserve way more, hopefully you'll get it, keep up the good work :)

Everyone else is saying the same thing, but this channel is so good. You describe things so well that people who don't know about it can understand, while also leaving enough detail in that people who do know more can gain more from the video, and that is an incredible talent.

this is by far one of my favorite channels on this website. keep making the awesome content!

I don't know if I missed something but you should've been able to run the low pass resonance filter on the sin wave too, instead of needing the triangle wave... Regardless, great video

I just realized that this channel is like really new, and it's fucking awesome!! Keep up the good work!! (and may the mighty gods of the algorithm favor you)

what kind of succulents you got running with your synth setup?

Man, I've always known this stuff and the maths behind sound but I've never quite thought of how I could reverse it to calculate PI. Great work!

The SUB oscillator should be sine wave on the Microbrute. On the Minibrute, you have a choice switch that can be changed between sine or square.

I really like the production of this video! Very nice visuals. I just noticed the de-essing work you did actually made some words unintelligible. Not a huge issue, but one I thought you'd want pointed out for the future. Love the content, keep it up!

4/5ths of my youtube time is spent o. Either synths or maths. This hit my niche just right. HAPPY PI DAY

I came away from this finally knowing why square waves are made up of only odd harmonics! Great video!
