I'm advocate for military retirees focusing on their finances so that they are not FORCED to work. I call this the Gentleman of Leisure lifestyle. But that doesn't mean that it's all fun and games. Obligations and major projects crop up that you still have to deal with.

Yes Chuck, you are correct. I retired as a gentleman of leisure at the age of 39 as a Sr. NCO in 2000. When I get bored, I will often fly to London and visit Saville Row for a new bespoke suit. When in London, I stay at the Savoy. When that gets tiresome, I will travel to Monaco to take in the Formula one race and gamble at the casinos. Work? A new career? Ha! Leave that to the common folk. LOL

As a Gentleman of Leisure I have those inconveniences from time to time. One of the trade offs for my freedom was a diminished standard of living going to a pension instead of a paycheck. Waking up promptly at 7 AM - and actually getting out of bed at 8 AM - compensates.

Life as a Gentleman of Leisure isn’t a life guaranteed free of drama, obstacles and frustration. But it’s a life where drama, obstacles and frustration aren’t guaranteed.

I wish you well in your kitchen drama.

When I retired I thought that I was going to live the life of a country squire following pursuits that I enjoy and calling no man sir. Well that lasted 3 months when my wife (who worked from home before it was stylish) said, “dude, you gotta get a job, volunteer, take up a hobby, or do something that gets you out of the house. I love you, but there have to be a few hours a day that I don’t see you. You being home like this is driving both of us crazy.” She was right, I spent my career as a man of action and sitting around all day would have been a death sentence. As Jesus once said to me, “you gotta do something.” (Jesus and Lupita are the neighbors)

Thanks again Chuck! That’s my goal, but I too have been told I am not allowed to sit around the house all day.

The volunteer community and family engagements is a vacuum of probono labor. I imagine normal folks with healthy social fabric can face requested tasker overload. Whereas, us hermits get to meander a few months between social commitments.

I became a man of leisure a few years back. The plan was actually to go back to work after getting a degree in Human Rights Law in Ireland. That didn't work out and the allure of not reporting to work became irresistible. Quite a bit of my situation is due to luck; good health, good kids, European citizenship, Tricare Overseas availability among others. But you take advantage of the luck you are given. It involved a lot of looking at what was really important to us and what we actually needed to live on. So now we live on a small island in the Mediterranean and I play guitar and write. I volunteer with local charities and enjoy the lifestyle. There are drawbacks, you have to look harder for some products and things. But overall it works out.

Mr. Bureaucrat, don't let anyone tell you that TikTok influencer is not a respectable career.

Chuck! Really!? “They want you to get a job!” That’s conspiracy clap trap! And quit the whining! Would you like some cheese to go with that wine? 😂
