What ever the critics say the 120mm L30 rifled barrel is very, very capable, seen it first hand during the Charm 3 development programme, it was nicknamed the 40 Tonne gun meaning the breach pressure could go up to 40 Tonnes per Square inch, and as for the wear rate, the chrome plated lining made a huge difference

People should also remember that challenger 2 had its hatch open and the crew on top. 2 people died, one aged 19 and I believe the other was 33. Was also destroyed by another challenger 2 in a blue on blue incident. The crew of the destroyed challenger was from QRL (The Queens Royal Lancers) and the tank that fired was From RTR (Royal Tank Regiment)

I remember I played a mod for the game men of war: assault squad 2 with my friend and I remember we were playing the modern mod and I remember how that tank was a beast against tanks but was literally impossible to get anywhere because it was slow and hard to control

This was partially sorted out with the Challenger 2 CLIP receiving the Rheinmetall 120mm L/55 smoothbore gun to fire NATO ammunition, which this design choice would then be incorporated in the future Challenger 3.

The rifle barrel is a hangover from the older Chieftain built in the 60's. The army didn't want to spend money on producing new shells for a smooth bore barrel so it kept reusing a rifled barrel right up to the Challenger 2.

also UK are already making a challenger 3 prototype so maybe country's would prefer to wait for a updated version that could fix some of these problems or better integrate with modernization programs.
