Huawei has quietly revealed a major development on the HarmonyOS developer website, indicating the impending launch of the HarmonyOS operating system for PCs. The Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT, also known as the Hongmeng Xinghe version, has already opened Beta testing to early users. This new version, which completely abandons the Android ecosystem in favor of a native experience, promises to inject fresh vitality into the market.

The first public Beta tests will commence in August, with the official version rolling out in the fourth quarter. The HarmonyOS PC version's debut is highly anticipated, featuring a visually refreshing interface that balances aesthetics and functionality. The design guide showcases an interface similar to Mac's, with a status bar at the top and a Dock at the bottom, addressing multi-scenario needs and offering a more convenient user experience compared to traditional Windows interfaces.

HarmonyOS PC aims to create a highly unified ecosystem, ensuring seamless application experiences across PCs, smartphones, tablets, and other devices. This concept aligns with Apple's ecosystem coherence, promising users unprecedented smoothness and convenience. The recent IT outage caused by a CrowdStrike update error underscored the heavy reliance on Microsoft and raised concerns about potential future issues. A China-centric replacement like HarmonyOS PC could be the safest option to avoid such scenarios.

While existing Chinese PC operating systems like UnionTech OS and Kylin have not met expectations, many are hopeful about HarmonyOS PC. Given Huawei's strong R&D capabilities, the HarmonyOS PC Edition is seen as a potential competitor to Windows in China, aiming to offer more options for users and inject new momentum into the development of Chinese operating systems.

I'd use any OS on a PC before HarmonyOS PC... Well except Red Star OS. Anyway Linux is free so I'll keep using that but it's always good to have options, problem is going to be software at launch and being locked into an ecosystem.

Crowdstrike wasn't a MS problem, it could technically have affected Mac's or Linux as they have Falcon endpoints for those OS's but the widespread reliance on a single vendor potentially being a problem is a valid point.

I'm running Windows 11 for 6 years now and RedStar OS for 4 years now and has no problem so far, but interested with Harmony OS how it works, but still mostly used Windows 11 because all of my high end apps are only running Windows system and sideline Linux only thru Windows subsystem for LInux

After Trump banned the Huawei phones, many of us in Malaysia to support Huawei bought the last of the Huawei phones that ran Android (Huawei Mate 30 Pro and 30 Pro 5G. But to our great disappointment Huawei has abandoned these supporters by refusing to assist users of these phones now to upgrade beyond Android 10 to run their financial apps. Email messages to various Huawei supports receive not even an acknowledgement. Since these older versions of Huawei phones are no longer under any kind of support or warranties, the decent thing to do is for Huawei to send these phones one last patch that allows users to use the " oem unlock" function to upgrade, at their own risk, to Android versions after Android 10. In any event there is no point buying any Huawei phone running HarmonyOS as they still do not support many common financial apps.
Because of the abandonment of Huawei phone running Android 10, everyone I know have swore never to buy Huawei phones again.
I hope this comment would reach Huawei HQ in China. Or someone would send it to them in China.
