The glued blocks are actually amazing! They're meant for painting while the paper is still attached to the block :) That way you can use more water on it with minimal buckling/wrinkling, because the paper is held down. I've always been told that palette knives are the best way to remove the paper after your're done painting on it.

Here's my philosophy: cheap paints & cheap watercolor paper for tests, sketches and studies; good paints (Schmincke) and good paper (Arches) for the final artwork. I wasted a lot of good paint and paper by not doing tests, sketches, and studies first. Now, I'm smart. And everyone likes smart! Fun video and the characters look FRANtastic! Cheers!

damn! Now I need to add this expensive watercolour paper to my wishlist!
I'm at a very "newbie" level at watercolour painting - and I never thought of this but - the fact that english is not your main language is kind of awesome because you talk slowly and with simple words (instead of expert watercolour difficult english words) and I can actually understand everything you say!
I hope this doesn't come out wrong!

Hi Fran! The watercolor blocks are glued down on all four sides to prevent the paper from warping when painting without taping. The idea is that you cut it off when you are done painting. Otherwise just get loose sheets because you are paying for them to glue it down for you so loose sheets are much less expensive. I love Saunders Waterford paper! Love the illustrations.

Hello Fran!!! So happy to see a new video of yours!!! :) I'm going to give you a tip of how to take a sheet out of the block. I used Saunders Waterford HP (HP > hot pressed) for a long time, and I used to use a knife for taking the sheets out, but the problem with that was that I will sometimes ruin the paper or the paper sheet below. A pain in the ass!!! I had to be so careful. So what worked best for me was: Start cutting only the beginning of the sheet with a knife, and when you have a bit cut, take a ruler, stick it inside and then run it across the edges of the block. Pretend you are cutting it but instead with a knife, with the ruler! The paper will pop out SO and you won't ruin the paper.... After using the block thou, I ended up buying single sheets 50x70cm and cut them myself at home (price is also much better that way!). Although now I prefer the look of Arches Cold pressed (a bit more pricy but SO AMAZING) Saunders waterford is still a great paper I use, both hot pressed and cold pressed. Saludos desde España, espero que te sirva el tip <3

A dull butter knife is the best tool for cutting off the block. Love you and what you do. Best wishes! Jenn

Someday could you share about booth displays + tips + experiences you've had? You mention illustration fairs and things like that and I'd love to hear your insight.

Fran if you want to try another kind of amazing paper, I really love Arches (I use hot press although they have all the kinds, in pads, blocks or by the sheet). It's also 100% cotton, acid free blah blah blah and the hot press is my favorite because it allows me to make all these tiny details.
