Listen to the first sounds recorded on Mars

Nasa scientists release the first sounds ever recorded on Mars, a light gust of wind on the planet's surface on Monday. 'I invite you now to, if you would like to, close your eyes and just imagine yourself sitting on the surface of Mars and listening to the surroundings,' says Dave Gruel, camera suite lead for the Perseverance rover

If anyone's wondering why it's so quiet, Mars has a very thin atmosphere, and sound needs a medium such as a fluid like a gas to pass through in order for instruments like microphones or our ears to pick it up, so sounds on Mars will be much quieter than they will on earth because the air is very sparse.

I think some people have completely missed how amazing this is. We as mammals should not be able to even see pictures of its landscape, let alone hear its environment. The mere fact that we have an audio recording of a completely different planet outside of our own is extraordinary.

My heart skipped a beat the first time I heard that wind sound. Mars has been there for billions and billions of years going through a similar feat like that of earth, except the phenomenon of organic life. Now Earth has stretched its hand and touched its friend.

Sounds like they should have also invested in a wind guard for their mic so we could hear what Mars sounds like and not the sound of the mic diaphragm being overloaded.
