I add texture by not making the bed. Visual impact! Today's sponsor: Brook-no-side-eyes.

One thing I will say to keep in mind about task lighting:
If you're one of those people that like to rearrange your room every once and while, wall sconces and hanging pendant lights won't work well with that....once that lights are hung/attached to the wall, without a lot of work moving/refinishing walls, they're not moving. Which means the bed stays wherever those lights are.

Just something to keep in mind!!

Nick - Preach! My parents still have sheets (and blankets and pillows) from before I was born -- I'm 42. I recently visited them and the sheets they used to make up the guest bed were for their California king bed and the guest bed is a full size. Also, my dad kept arguing with me that the guest bed is a queen size and not a full. This combination of madness broke me a bit and I insisted that we clean out the linen closet and re-organize it. My parents have been in their house since 1984, and this was the first time they ever went through the linen closet - EVER. Anyway, very proud that I was able to get them to part with some of the old linens. I then bought a brand new set of sheets, pillows, and quilt for the guest bed (it is a full size mattress). My parents now use the guest bedroom to nap in.

So, I recently bought a house of my own after the end of my 25 year marriage. My previous house was modern/minimalist, which was “cool and “slick” but lacked warmth and personality (a bit snarky, but the house was my exes idea and he really kept control of the decor). Anyway, I started to purchase things for the new place before I moved in and according to Nick’s aesthetic, I did pretty well in my new bedroom, which is pretty large). I ticked most of the boxes he mentioned (except for extra blankets on the bed). The look is kind of “girly glam” which I am really liking. After the minimal look for the past 10 years I wanted something pretty and cozy (my motto became “screw modernist, I’d rather be cozy 😏). Wish I could upload a couple of pics and get his (and other’s) opinions. ☺️

To me, slight asymmetry in shared bedrooms reflects not only interest but that the space is shared by 2 equally strong individuals: they obviously have a lot in common but ultimately do things slightly differently, no?
Thanks for what you do Nick, not only your ideas but also the background work you put into this, the timeline, the detail of items... while still keeping your wit and unique throw away lines that always make me smile. ♥

Bed perfection for me: Queen size bed, cotton sheets, silk pillowcases on the two soft pillows and linen or cotton on the two firmer pillows, linen doona cover, cashmere throw, spare velvet reading cushion.

With our tiny bedroom we cannot add anything but we did invest in great sheets/duvet cover sets that match the chocolate brown wall I painted. I was really hoping you'd mention the position of the bed. We stayed with several family members in America this Summer and every single guest room had the bed directly under the window. So every morning we lay there staring at the ceiling or a blank wall or a single painting. I never realized how unpleasant that was but when we got home it was almost euphoric to lie in bed looking our our big windows at 3 trees of different colors with birds in them.

“If your bedroom is looking a little drab, a little boring these days and you’re looking for ways to zhuzh things up” NEVER FELT SO CALLED OUT BUT SEEN AT THE SAME TIME. How did you know this was the exact video I needed?

I love how you focus on function, not just looks

I swear you’re videos are eerily timely for me. I had literally just gotten back from walking around our framed in house and trying to decide where we would put the beds in each room, and came home to find this! I love that you acknowledge that we don’t all have big spaces to work with and offer some scaled down ideas as well. In our main bedroom I think we have the symmetrical-but-asymmetrical thing - one nightstand is wood and the other a small round glass topped table. I have a round glass globe table lamp for the wooden nightstand and a wooden-based table lamp for the glass nightstand. Wood and glass on both sides, but in reverse. Love all your ideas for bringing in different textures!

I love a rug in the bedroom because besides the reasons you mentioned, it absorbs sound and you can notice that as soon as you enter the room. It feels more peaceful.

Here’s a bedroom “storage hack” that works for me so I thought I’d share: you know the hall trees that usually go in a mud room or entryway? They usually have a little bench, some shelves, hooks for coats, scarves, maybe a bar to put hangers on. Get one for the bedroom.

It may seem unorthodox, but I find it super practical. While Nick is absolutely right to point out under-the-bed storage, that works really well for seasonal stuff, like he said, but there’s every-day storage that can make a room messy: I need a place to put a couple decorative pillows I don’t use for sleeping (I don’t just want to throw them on the floor), or what about clothing items you pull out of the closet and wear them for a bit; they are not ready to go into the laundry bin just yet, but you don’t want to put them back in the closet with the fresh cloths. What about your nightwear or loungewear? Where does that stuff go during the day? For me, a hall tree is a great solution to keep all these things organized in one place and prevent my bedroom AND closet from becoming a mess. It even goes well in your bathroom if you have an on-suite. The hall tree is a great transitional space for keeping your transitional items (items not quite in need of storage but not in immediate use) organized and neat. And they come in such varieties of design styles that you can probably find one that looks like “it belongs” in your bedroom/on-suite. I highly recommend it.

I have hemp sheets. They feel silky but are incredibly durable. They keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

It's so satisfying when you watch a video on the "DOs" of decorating and you've already checked off every box.

I saw a French country room that had a round table covered in a long white linen tablecloth and two delicate chairs, and it created just the most romantic, inviting little as-if-nook for two, breaking up what would have just been long flat wall space. Very lovely.

Random but I appreciate this SO much about your videos - your voice is super soothing and easy to listen to! I never feel annoyed by the end of even your longest videos. Idk why it's so common for people to be loud and obnoxious with grating voices here on YouTube, but you're a breath of fresh air, thank you! Always appreciate your advice and levity 😁

Great advice, per usual! Furniture with storage is a must-have for me. A tip for anyone shopping for a bed frame with drawers, consider drawer placement on the bed frame. Most bed frames have drawers on the longest side of the bed that are blocked from opening if you put a nightstand next to them. If you plan to use your drawers frequently as I do, think about a floating shelf or a three-drawer system that leaves space for your nightstands.

I love my Brooklinen sheets! I converted to all linen a few years ago and haven’t looked back. I love the soft, rumpled feel of linen and it looks so casual and lived in. My first fitted sheet became threadbare and tore after two years of daily use and Brooklinen replaced it with an entire set, no charge. I’m a devoted customer.

I don’t think people who sleep in sheets that needed to go 10 years ago, would be interested in watching your videos lol

I have three sets of sheets/bedcovers. One silk, one eucalyptus, and one cotton. The silk are beautiful but such a pain to care for that I don’t use them often. The eucalyptus are lovely for fall, winter, and spring. The cotton is great for summer. Material composition of sheets matters.
