Bare Minimum Prepping Items for Each Preparedness Category
If you were to start prepping for SHTF today, what would be the cheapest way to cover your bases at a minimum, basic level?

It's easy to assume everyone has been prepping for years on end if that is your situation. But everyday, new preppers are starting out and looking for ways to cover their bases without breaking the bank. This list should give you a bare minimum amount of preparedness items to have on hand in each category for emergency situations. Of course, you can and should expand from there. But, even if this is all that you have, you will be more prepared than the majority of the general population.

I am one of those new preppers. Still relatively young but understands where this world is heading, let alone this country. Your channel and others have been a godsend to me who is just starting out.

Four years ago, a packet of Mountain House beef stew cost $6.00 at Wal-Mart. It's now $9.00 for a packet.
Fifty three years ago, I was a Boy Scout. Cooking, swimming, camping, knot tying all learned back then made my life better.

Tarps are awesome especially for blocking wind. Wind can wreck your body temp and burn you too. They're not just for keeping rain off of you.

Rice and beans are great if you've got enough fuel to cook them. Uncooked, neither is very digestible*. Yes, you can use a solar cooker. But solar cookers are luck dependent like weather in general and take all day. Half you rice should be instant and half your beans should be canned. Oatmeal should supplement both. A small, "picnic" style charcoal grill is cheap and can run fire wood, even it's a just "lunch fire" of twigs and chips. And a minimal kit must have a knife.

*80% of the population is urban dwellers, that includes most of the "suburbs". That means you're either cooking on electric or maybe on piped case. Without lights, those are as useful as ice skates to a caterpillar. And so are dried beans and white rice that even if you can get a fire going and not attract every loser for two miles- beans take how long to be edible? Canned beans, open the lid, add a fork. Instant rice, water and rice in a pot, bring it to a boil, lid on and kill the fire, let it sit for 10 minutes. Oatmeal, the same but you can eat oatmeal after you just soak it cold. Less exposure, less fuel, it's more survivable.

I would also recommend baby aspirin for this list. Cheap and very useful in a cardiac event. And also at a minimum a knife. You have cordage in your list but no way to cut it.

Anyone who suggests to get a Sayer Mini has never had to use one for a long duration. Get a Sayer Squeeze instead, it is $20 more, has 30% to 80% more flow rate depending on the bag or bottle used, is much easier to clean by backflush, and has a reputation of lasting multiple years instead of multiple months with the mini.

On paper the mini is better, in reality it is junk and gets replaced.

For the Refuge items it also good to note that you can use an HSA to buy their items, which my company even matches like $500 on it. Some people might not have the money on hand but could have an HSA and not realize they could use it for that.

Great list! I would add a good pocket knife and multi-tool. I've used my multi-tool every time I've gone camping.

Try Eating rice and beans only for a week, highly recommend grabbing canned soup by the case to put on your beans and rice. Instead of a tarp I would rather have a tent, keeps the bugs out so you can sleep better. Sleep is way more important than people think, helps with healing and just keeps you sharp.

Out of everything essential for survival, water is the most essential. All surface water is contaminated so purifying it is a must. If you're sheltering in place, you need a way to strain and boil water before using. Even a clean tee shirt can be used to strain it. Then boil it with a small camp stove, wood stove, rocket stove, sun kettle or very small camp fire.

Brother, how simple you made this for the newest of the new to prepping is exactly what everyone needs. Even myself as a moderate prepper took notes on this. If i had anyone ask me "hey what should I prep?" Id send them the link to this video. Great video, brother.

Best advice I followed when starting was to prep for one event (power down, flood, winter storm, etc). Think of what you may need. Think of the least expensive way to prep for it. In the North I focused on a winter power outage and tailored my preps accordingly. It's amazing how much you can do with just candles!

Our local Walmart clearance sale Sawyer mini double packs for ten bucks a few months back because there were left over from Christmas. I snatched up everything they had

I would suggest one really great Prepping book with all the essentials for survival off grid, first aid, etc. Absolutely loved this content, very realistic MP. So happy I’m well past this stage of basic survival. 👍

Or some like me, who have done some thorough prep, but also NOT done some of the basics. I needed this reminder. No reason to have holes, when today is the day I can fix that.

Just a note on that Sawyer mini water filter, after you have used it don’t let it freeze. Freezing will make it ineffective.

Some means of cooking. Small Trangia or sticks camping stove. I would add some knife, no need to be the fanciest one, there are decent low priced knives. Great work again, MP. I love your videos.

I lived off grid In on some pretty isolated and solitary conditions for 2 yr’s…you can’t go wrong with the food, the light and the water filter…and a Bic..but it would have been tough without my Walkman, batteries galore and my cassette mixed tapes. Good stuff man…
