We bought a 1989 43' Irwin MKIII 2.5 years ago from Sodus Pt NY. Traveled down the Erie Canal then sailed to Boston and then down to Key Biscayne Fla to the Bahamas 2 winters in a row! What a beautiful cruising boat this was!!

It’s been a blessing to have stumbled into your channel as I want to get a sailboat for myself

I love the "what scares me" comments. I learn more through those comments than anything else. Good video. Thanks, man.

I've seen several very well maintained, well preserved Irwin 52's. This was not one of them. As for the IP 38, that interior wood looks to be in rough shape. If you can see it in the pictures, that means it's really bad in person. It looks like the boat spent some time further south.

Its cool you are now doing a consulting service on Sailing subjects. I had suggested that to you way back when use to message you about my Grampian G23.

Tim, I just listened to your comments about the Catalina 30. I have an 86 C34 which had a similar problem. The early boats had a plywood spacer between the hull and the bilge floor. In my case, water had leaked from a crack in the keel seam and up through a couple keel bolts. Some of the plywood showed rot in some test holes. We cut open the bilge floor, dug out the plywood and built up layers of fiberglass according to Catalina instructions. I imagine G10 could be used to speed the process. A dirty job but certainly doable. We also lowered the keel a few inches, cleaned the mating surfaces, new sealant and a couple layers of fiberglass over the keel seam and there have been no issues since.

Everyone I've ever talked to has praised Irwin's.Said they should be on my short list. The boat brand I've been told to avoid is O'Day.

You remind me so much of my uncle, may he rest in peace. I've always been into cars, and when I was 17, I was going to spend $1, 700 on a '79 Camaro. Luckily, I asked him to give it a look-over and sure enough, the car had been in a major front end collision and all the steering components were literally jury rigged back together with *wire!* I could have easily lost control of the car and had a very serious accident! I learned so much about cars from him! At one point he had a close friend that was selling a '69 Camaro SS - in 95% grade A condition. The only thing it needed was paint and some engine work due to it having been sitting for almost 15 years. It was a bit pricey, but I had the money in cash ready to go. Unfortunately, someone else found out and bought it out from under me!! Today, that car would be worth in excess of 30 grand - at least, because it had the 396 engine and the two rows of square louvres over the carb and all the chrome was *pristine!* I could kick myself for not making the decision right there and then. My uncle had looked it over and said it was in amazingly well kept condition! I better get to what I was going to ask you or my head will explode!😡
Tim, you had mentioned in one of your videos that a particular boat maker builds their hulls from thick fiberglass, then let's it sit for a month for curing/drying. Which company was that and which others build similarly stout hulls?? Thanks Tim!!

I have learned that that's a common problem with pre-1989 Catalina 30s. They put plywood at the keel joint, and it rots and then causes the keel to loosen. It can be fixed, but later Catalina 30s didn't have this problem. They stopped putting plywood there.

That keel is exactly why I would be looking at that boat LOL

Not to worry. I won't be buying anything for $130, 000 especially when that's just the beginning of expenses.

diesel fuel tank contamination from bilge water....huge operation to replace the fuel tanks. compression test on the engine. fresh water tank contamination, also requiring extraction and replacement, may never come back together again the right way.... agreed on undue moving parts, the more moving parts the greater failure points, no center boards for me... keel bolts are a crucial area. typos in the ad are red flags for me

Catalina had a problem years ago in that the deck around the mast was too week and under normal stress, the deck wound arch up and loose deck support. That may be what you saw. Later models had strengthening of this area to prevent the flexing. I forget now but it may have used a steel plate.

The first boat - would that keel issue suggest it's had a hard run aground?

I had to laugh when Tim said "he might be mean". Tim that is just what I want in a surveyor, no, a junkyard dog kind of a guy. I want that guy out there tapping every inch of the hull, lifting access hatches and growling a little under his breath. A guy who rolls out the sails and checks every light. HAHA, a badass. But then I have lost my lust for boats and cars also, but I almost bought a Jeanneau 36 the other day it was so gorgeous.
