When number systems were expanded to include negative numbers, rules had to be formulated so that multiplication would be consistent regardless of the sign of the operands.

The number doesn't always have to be a negative number because if u have a positive number and a negative number your answer can be positive too because the rule said that the sign takes the bigger number meaning if 5 is positive and 2 is negative the answerwould take the larger number sign
