Duck Hooking My Driver

Duck hooking my driver. I have been asked by a viewer Oliver McKinley why he is duck hooking his driver. This is a pretty common complaint and there are 3 main reasons why this happens. I preface the video by saying I have never seen Oliver hit a golf shot so I can't definitively say why exactly Oliver is duck hooking his driver.

In this video golf tip I outline the most common reasons why people duck hook so this should help Oliver and the many other golfers that snap hook their driver.

My name is Brian Fitzgerald - I'm an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at two venues. The Morack Public GC in Vermont South and the Lang Lang GC in beautiful South Gippsland (An hour and a quarter from Melbourne) where there are lot's of Kangaroos.

FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don't feel that old.

Why do you make videos for YouTube? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.

Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.

So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.

What do you film with? - I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I'm using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.

What do you edit with? - About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere - prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio

Do you make money off YouTube? - Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.

Thanks for watching!
Brian

Of all the videos I've ever seen, this is the first one that addressed the right middle fingers as a culprit for shutting the face. That's an instant subscribe. :)

Man I really appreciate this video. My sequence was off, and I couldn’t figure it out. My shoulders were flying open first, because I was trying not to have my club “stuck” behind me, but I know now that it was ultimately causing my hook…I was hitting high beautiful draws today, and was back to my old self. Thanks a ton.

Great video! I searched a ton of videos and yours is the best. I think we tend to over analyze when the answer might be in the basics. I went in the backyard and set up for the driver, i then put the driver shaft across my shoulders and the shoulders were open. I squared up my shoulders with the shaft and took a swing. I could tell straight away this was the solution. The swing was going from 7 to 1 on the clock face as opposed to 6-5:30 to 12-11:30. I should add it felt smoother with more speed. We played the next day and i smashed a drive down the right side of the fairway on the first hole. Game on! I was both relieved and mad at myself for struggling with this for a month. I’ll be checking your tips first when i need help with another part of my game. Thanks so much and well done!

So simply explained…
I suffer each time I want to “ kill that ball” where my sequence goes out of wack and couldn’t get it back. Thanks for breaking it down Brian, I can’t wait to see my drives now.

Brian this is amazing advice. When I'm off my miss is this EXACT problem. And I probably have all those symptoms to boot. My grip I need to fight a strong grip, my shoulders get open and probably sequence issues. It's just hard to be disciplined. I'm going to go out Monday and try to tweak all those issues. I really appreciate the video.

My backswing is another issue I can't seem to do without being too mechanical or thinking what every position is. It kills me lol

Thank you so much Brian - I’ve been struggling with what I call the push me / pull you since taking up the game again after a 20 year hiatus - ie consistently duck hooking or slicing the driver. Turns out I’ve had far too strong a grip - simply followed your advice, stepped out onto the course and played the best round since my return a year ago. No more hole killers! (Irons as well as woods). Can’t thank you enough. Now I check every shot!

Great video! The issue I had initially was coming over the top, then I corrected it to hitting drives properly, then suddenly about a month ago I started hooking it. I think my problem is that I'm staying way behind it and the body is not moving in unison like you pointed out. If I could focus on proper sequencing, I will be great. I'll try out your exercise and see how I do! Thank you again!

Fantastic video! This is me. My body sequence seems ok with irons but with driver a little out of whack.
My duck hook is worse with my hybrid so will need to figure that out too.
Thank you

Holy cow you’re a legend. I’ve had 30 people tell me it’s this that and the other. They didn’t tell me any of these things and I think I was slightly off on all of them.

This has been an ongoing problem for me for several years and I am just starting to come out of it. My lead hand grip is a little strong. If I weaken it by putting it straight down the shaft, I can't square the face and I slice the ball. I won't change this unless I want to intentionally hit a cut. What has helped me has been focusing on clearing my hips and getting my trail elbow in front of my body and keeping my trail arm lower than my lead arm through impact. I literally warm up as if I am swinging a baseball bat at shoulder height, focusing on keeping that trail arm lower than the lead arm, and rotating my hips through impact. My issue is the deeper into a round I get, the more likely I am to revert back to my old habits and hit a round-ruining hook. How can I keep the "good" going throughout my rounds? I will also mention that the hooking problem gets worse the longer the club gets. Thanks for an excellent video.

I never thought about the hands and shoulder alignment part, I’m usually good with the driver but it’s my fairway and hybrid that need work so I’ll try this out on Saturday when I play

Before changing anything. If possible go to a simulator or/and a pro, and check swing path and cub face. You might be doing most things right. I suffered from a terrible hook. Turned out my swing path was ”perfect” BUT but my club face would come in minus 10-12 sometimes. I was close to a really good swing but I could barely play the game. I was so frustrated. Tried everything, except just weaken my right hand. In my head I had a neutral grip but i didnt. My left hand was just perfect but not the right. The focus is often on the left hand and you forget the impact the right hand has on the swing. I think more people get the left hand right and leave it like that, like I did. Luckily for me I asked the pro one time at the range and he noticed this right away.
It feels so wrong when you do a grip change. Like you wont be able to hit the ball but pretty soon your new grip will feel normal.
