Before the pandemic outbreak, we had been living through a period of increasing polarisation. But now that Covid-19 crisis is revealing the full extent of our shared vulnerability and common humanity, is there an opportunity for us to come together to heal some of those divides?

Re: Contempt - JH is certainly correct, contempt among Progressives towards The Right not only polarizes across parties but also within the Progressive community itself and increasingly casts everyone not in line with the latest orthodoxy into The Right. I'm not sure that Progressivism can be reformed for that reason. Historically Progressive movements expand rapidly and then collapse and largely disappear in the US.

Get the politicians to shutup and let the experts speak.

Before opining that "we don't really know how society works", Haidt would do well to study political economy a tad. The idea that, in America, the right-left divide is merely a matter of morality and trying to be more open to the ideas and experiences of others completely omits the effect of massive income and wealth inequalities. There is no way that we will ever resolve or even address our ideological differences if the rate of acceleration toward an economic oligopoly--what I would call a rapacious oligarchy--is not openly discussed.

Everything discussed in this video has gotten significantly worse in intervening years. Democrats and Republicans are lost, and the fringe parties are even more disconnected from reality. They all need to go if we're to have any hope for making it through the enxt few decades whole.

18:30 Why do I never hear a word from Haidt examining the reasons for Left Wing "contempt" towards the Right Wing??? Why does Haidt never defend honesty and respect for Physical Reality? I don't hate the person - but I have absolute contempt for how easily the Right Wing fabricates completely false narratives about serious explainable learnable science. AND WHY SHOULDN'T I FEEL THAT WAY HAIDT? ... Nope instead Haidt rather focus on the lack of certainty within science - as if that were a fault.
Why doesn't Haidt spend a moment pointing out that the uncertainties in science are about refining focus and deepening understanding.
