No, not having a switch on the outlet doesn't waste electricity. We put our switches on the devices themselves. It doesn't matter whether the switch is on the wall or the device, if it's off the circuit is open and no current can flow. Compare it to a garden hose. It doesn't matter whether you turn off the water at the tap or the nozzle: If either is off, no water will flow.

Exceptions: Some devices (e.g. clocks) don't have a switch, because you never turn them off.

Electricity doesn’t just shoot out of outlets into the air lol. If there’s nothing plugged in or if the device is turned off then the current doesn’t continue. We do have switches (e.g. light switches) that can be turned on or off and that can be independent of an outlet or wired in to an outlet

SOME American plugs do have on/off switches but it’s rare and a lot of times only the top one on the outlet works with the switch, the bottom will work even when it’s off so you can plug a light into the on/off one and like a charger or something you use even in the dark into the bottom one

3:15, . in the States, we don't generally have those on our outlets. A constant on and off flickering invites more potential for a spark.

I'm so glad to see both flags in his background. It's great to remember your heritage and where you came from, but equally important to appreciate your new home and recognize it has its own history and culture.

In the beginning when he is listing off the objects that are the largest in the world, ex: mailbox and rocking chair, that’s in a small town in Illinois. I live about 15 minutes away and it’s really cool. The town is called Casey.

The switch on the outlet has nothing to do with saving elctricity. The switch on the outlet is to reduce arcing between the pins on the plug and the live terminals in the socket. The faster the connection is made or broken, the shorter the arc time. Look at an appliance that does not have a switch (phone/ laptop charger), you will see the end of the pins are discoloured or slightly burnt looking from repeated arcing when you plug/ unplug the device. Since a switch can close or open a circuit many times faster than simply shoving the the plug in the socket, a switched outlet significantly reduecs the amount of arcing.

Some of those shortened words aren't universally spelled that way in the states. For instance, I've never spelled dialogue or monologue without the "ue." With some words like "canceled" either spelling is acceptable and you see both.

Luka,
i agree with you, i wish there was just one standard for pint glasses. in a way the US has a safety device on plug ins near water called a ground fault interupter, that way when something like a hair dryer falls into the water the electricity is shut off to avoid electrecution, and there's a reset button.

New York is a pretty big state, especially for the North East. New York _City_ has a high population density, but New York State has plenty of farm country and small quaint towns.

The fact that UK outlets have on/off switches and US outlets don't isn't about saving electricity — it's about safety. The UK has a 220-volt power system, whereas the US uses only 110 volts (which is a lot less likely to kill you if you somehow get shocked). UK plugs themselves are also a lot safer — check out Tom Scott's video "British Plugs Are Better Than All Other Plugs, And Here's Why" if you're curious.

Our outlets don't have switches but our appliances do. Unless they don't.

The lack of double deck bases are likely a result of a combination of road and bridge building standards, motor vehicle regulations, and liability.

This is also why taking a US vehicle that gets 25mpg to the UK means it's immediately getting 30mpg.

1) In the U.S., we do have some double-decker rail cars for passengers. BTW, I find the plural spelling "buses" confusing. It looks like it should rhyme with "fuses, " not "fusses."
2) Hello from Rhode Island. Despite our high population density and small size, we do have rural towns.
3) It's ironic that the U.S. is lampooned by the British and the rest of the world for still using a system of Imperial units of measurement developed in the UK. It seems curious for the British to mock Americans, because the British still use some Imperial units. They even measure weight in "stone, " which is never used in the U.S. As to why we define a gallon differently, the "gallon" Wikipedia page has more information than you'll ever need.

California is huge, but so many large cities of population and densities that it makes it seem more dense than the state as a whole, but still makes it overall dense. 39 million people. New York is not really dense at all. Once you get out of NYC proper, it's not dense at all, and the state is decently big in area, around the middle of all states.

What do you drink at the pub if you hate beer? I absolutely love beer, especially Heineken and Guinness…hell, I’ve even had them in the same pint and it’s oddly delicious. 🤤

It's still crazy how measurements are so different
