After being obliterated by Ubuntu, this time we’re taking your advice and trying out Linux Mint. Because if at first you don’t succeed, just… put “sudo” at the start and try again!

I'm 65 and I've been on Linux Mint for a few years now. If I can do it, ANYONE can!!

It is Microsoft themselves, who are increasingly becoming the main advertisers for Linux for me.

although this series of videos is obviously tongue in cheek i think its a good lesson about how people who aren't particularly tech savvy approach linux and the problems that need to be fixed before we actually have a shot at the mythical year of the linux desktop

It says Ubuntu in the boot menu, because Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, but the Mint team have done a good job of removing all the frustrating parts of the stock Ubuntu experience

9:08 By the way, for some reason, the option to allow steam to attempt to run Windows games isn’t on by default. Portal 2 has a Linux version on Steam anyway, so it doesn’t need that option to be on. To get Steam to try to run Windows games, do Steam _(Top left)_ > Settings > Compatibility > Enable Steam Play for all other titles.

Mint is a solid and simple choice for a beginner. You really don't need to use terminal for anything there. There's a GUI for everything, from installing to updating to managing.

I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop about 18 months ago. Within a week, the entire house had dumped Windows and migrated wholesale to Linux. Four laptops, two SFF machines and a desktop. Every machine runs like a dream, way faster and smoother than Windows and just so much more pleasant to use, very simple too. Sure there are a couple of things to learn and the odd gotcha, but nothing like the garbage you get with say, Windows 11, where the UI must have been designed by someone who hated humanity.

Could not be happier with it now and intend to make a decent donation to the Mint project soon.

I’m glad you gave it a fair shake in the video.

Of course gaming on Linux is real, the Steam OS that comes with the Steam Deck is Linux.

I like how he sounds like he is mocking his sponsor but he's not. It's just his voice.

Honestly linux mint should be labelled as the "default" linux so we stop confusing beginners

Linux mint is the "it just works" of linux community

Linux has plenty of rough edges but once you get it set up how you like and get used to the things you can't change, it's a rock solid OS.

I got 7 months. Kick my own Linux back up to speed. Used it for a lot of my collage days.
With the death of 10 I am going to go to Mint fully for my home media and living room PC.
Wishing all the people jumping out of Windows the best of luck.
