Positive Definite Linear Operators

We discuss positive definite (positive semi-definite) linear operators on an inner product space. These are symmetric operators which have real non-negative eigenvalues. We give alternative characterizations of these operators. Namely, we show that an operator is positive definite if and only if it has a positive definite square root. This will be an essential tool in the polar decomposition of a matrix.
