Screenwriter and producer Mara Brock Akil knew what was like to feel invisible. In 1999 she looked around Hollywood and saw an extinction underway: Black women, and their stories, being written out of primetime TV. At the time, the then 30-year-old was putting the finishing touches on her first network show, a sitcom for UPN called Girlfriends. A new millennium was on the horizon, and she wasn’t going to let the future begin without Black women front and centre.

Girlfriends is my comfort TV, I could watch it all day every day. Toni was by far my favorite, I always love a self centered diva the most lol, but I genuinely enjoyed the seasons after she left and thought Monica fit right in well. They NEED a movie to give us closure.

I loved Maya and Darnell’s storyline! From the break up to the reconciliation-not to mention Darnell was a nutritious snack to look at. Their scenes were raw and real. Well done !!!

Im not a fan of reboots but i think a 10-episode reboot to give real closure would be good for girlfriends. It ended with joan's fiancee returning home soon & her & toni never got to resolve their issues.

I loved the early seasons. Good show in general, but later seasons had a lot of drama, while the early ones were such a wonderful breeze of early 2000s

Girlfriends definitely deserved a proper ending it ended on a cliffhanger just like Smart Guy, That's so Raven, The Jeffersons, The Wayans Bros, Family Matters, Moesha, and many other shows that also ended on a cliffhanger as well
