Nice to see someone making a conscious distinction between self hosting (home server) and a home lab.

I came here to refresh my docker knowledge and learn about home assistant but a major takeaway is the "pinout" command! How VERY useful 😀

Thanks again! I don't have enough time for everything today. but, I know you have all the resources up for us later. BTW while at a Happy lemon store in Silicon Valley, a friend was having lunch and asked about your T-shirt. I had no problem telling them how great your content has been for me. Hopefully others seen me sporting your merch.

I was creating HyperV VMs with shared parent images branching off each other with no bloat. I’d stick the OS copies and any other foundation images on a high speed read only RAID array for fantastic performance. In 15 seconds could ‘docker-compose’ a wide array of multi-server deployments with all the networking and hardware already configured and talking. That was over 15 years ago.

As the world devolved into docker everything, all the ‘benefits’ I’d hear were also possible out of box with VMs. The difference was that docker seems to have been created by people who hate humans.

Small point but in your install instructions for docker, after the "sudo apt update" there should also be a "sudo apt upgrade" (otherwise you will just get a list of updates but not actually install them).

Thank you, Kevin. That is very helpful. I've been running Ubuntu on my pi, but there's a fair bit of trouble shooting, so I might switch to pi os with docker

I am running NPM Nginx Proxy Manager in a container to route all my incoming traffic. It was easier to set up than full Nginx.

Hello Mr Kevin McAleer, I find your tutorials very interesting. I have installed sql server on docker on raspberry pi5, but I can't manage to connect to the database on azure data studio or sql server management. I have installed postgres and I connect easily. Can you help me? thank you

Can I do this on a single Raspberry Pi 5 or would it be better to use a cluster of 8GB Pi 5s (of about 2-3 worker nodes, especially since I would like to run AI language models on this as well)?

Also, are you able to make a video in the future of how to make a cluster of Raspberry Pi 5s?

Q: Would it be more efficient to run a headless raspberry pi os compared to the desktop version you installed or would the performance gains be minimal?

Why not use the $HOME and/or $USER env variables in your scripts, instead of using "/home/pi" or "/home/kev" etc?
