What's that spooky sound? This eerie howl was recorded by Dominique Frideger on California's Golden Gate Bridge. There's nothing to do but keep calm and drive on.

It is caused by the wind through the fence rails you can see on the side of the bridge. They widened the space between the rails to reduce the wind pressure on the bridge, and this noise now occurs under certain wind conditions. It happens quite frequently, and is very loud. You can hear it across the whole city. The engineers who made this change knew this would happen, but did it anyway, thinking it would add to the mystique of the bridge. Obviously, this noise has upset many residents. The bridge can howl for hours at a time, and it is quite annoying.

I live near the Golden Gate Bridge and I often go on it and on windy days you can definitely hear the howling sound and sometimes I can hear it from my house and it sometimes spooks me at night.

I’m from Hayward and one time I heard the whistling from all the way there to Hayward that’s how loud it gets

It’s the wind blowing through the cables and that is what makes the noise there’s nothing to worry about I’ve been on that bridge many times!!

It's the 1800 souls crying from their jumps off the bridge

That is nothing compared to back in the 80s when it was closed down due to gale force winds, the suspension cables were singing, the bridge deck was swaying back end forth like a snake trying to get away. I looked ahead and saw a 24' Ryder box truck on its side and it was MOVING !, it held up just fine unlike the infamous Tacome Narrows bride. I kinda like that new sound reminds me of the wind harp in South San Francisco .

I heard that exact same noise on the GG bridge in the mid 1970s. It was the sound of a vehicle being dragged of the bridge by a tow truck after an accident. And I was a couple of football fields away from the bridge.

It's the wire when the wind blows between the wires that acts like a harmonic amplifier

The wind direction is perfect for the air to go through the 2 suspension cables at just the right angle to cause a "whistle" effect. basically like stretching two blades of grass out together and blowing through them.

It's the bridge telling you it's safe to jump now

Is it the wind, or the souls of the 1, 400 people who committed suicide from that bridge?😱

It's the wind. Keep driving, and welcome to the Bay.

The screams of the damned who jump off the gate.

Fun fact: me n my SO at the time back in 2005...were the only ones on the GGB for about 15 minutes. Stopped in the middle and made out until we hear on the loud speakers to move from the CHP!!

We're hearing the exact same sounds up here in Oregon. Howling comeing from the ocean . I got a bad feeling about 2023 .
